Any advice/concerns about just taking some Vanguard detachments and just spamming Chaos Havoc squads?

That is a very valid concern. Well, too late to edit it now.

What if I were to try the same thing, but with the Spearhead detachment? I would just try it and see, but only I play about once every two months.

Have a game planned for tonight:

My list: 904 points
Librarian Dreadnought (Storm Bolter)
Death Company Dreadnought (Furioso Fists w/Melta Gun and Storm Bolter)
2x Furioso Dreadnought (Furioso Fists w/Melta Gun and Storm Bolter)
Regular Dreadnought (Assault Cannon and DCCW w/Storm Bolter)

VS.
Tau list: 909 points
9x Crisis suits
2x Marker Drones

My friend and I wanted to try a game with our favorite units from our favorite armies! I'll post some pictures/details later. I'm expecting a lot of kiting and frustration, but if I can get into melee, my Dreads should be able to rip them to shreds with their big meaty claws.

8th Edition Battle Report!

The opposition: 900ish points of Tau Crisis Suits (One squad is waiting to deep strike and Farsight is hiding)

The home team: 900ish points of Blood Angel Dreadnoughts

The field of battle after enemy reinforcement arrived

A few turns later

Highlights include:
-Librarian Dreadnought wrecking things with a combination of Smite and Blood Boil
-A Furioso Dreadnought going from 8 wounds to 0 wounds from 1 round of fusion gun Overwatch fire
-Librarian forgetting how to use Psychic powers and falling victim to Perils of the Warp 3 times
-Farsight wrecking a Dreadnought in Close Combat!
-Furioso Fists tearing through Crisis suits like tissue paper

Ended up playing 3 games total in less than 4 hours. Low model count helped a bunch, but I also feel like the rules move a bit faster.

Final Score: Blood Angels- 2, Tau- 0

With all your data how about a graph of how many people have loyalist marine armies and nothing else? Given that they've been in every single starter box ever, and are the main focus of most art, and are the most iconic army it makes sense that everyone would have them. It would be more interesting to know how many people stick to nothing but marines, and how many people branch out (and how many people don't have marines at all)

When I was first starting, I wanted to go with Necrons. The fine folks at my Friendly Local Games Store pointed me toward Space Marines because they said it would be easier to learn with them!

....2000 points of Blood Angels later, it turns out they just all thought Necrons were cheesy and didn't want to play against them.

Truth. As a Blood Angels player and long time complainer, I'm really happy with this Codex. At first I was unhappy about the 6++ on Death Company instead of previous editions' 5+ Feel No Pain, but after considering the changes to AP and the removal of Instant Death I think it balances out.

Almost forgot, I played a game recently! 4,000 point Necron vs Tau game as a last hurrah before they get a codex. Used the Open War cards and ended up with a weird deployment.

Our objective was The Comet, so after two turns of exchanging fire the objective lands on the table. Fortunately it landed by my 20 strong Warriors squad and their Cryptek babysitter. End of turn 5, he wasn't able to move them off the objective, securing me the win!

In the midst of a 6+ month losing streak.

I have one friend that I play against. He has 8 armies to my 3 (BA, Necrons, Chaos Marines), so I never really know what to anticipate/bring when building a list while he has a pretty good idea what to expect from me. On top of that, I have been having comically poor dice rolls lately. I get that losing is a part of the game, but our games aren't even close. Whether they're Eternal War, Maelstrom, or even Open War, I have just been getting annihilated.

Assuming this post will be ignored, but just had to vent.

Pick whichever army you like best and focus on getting as good as you can with it. If you post what sort of lists you like to run we can give some tips. I personally play Blood Angels and know the army pretty well.

Alternately buy a Knight Castellan and the Renegade box and maybe some Helverins and surprise him one day with a brand new army that is very difficult to deal with when you aren’t expecting it. (Mostly kidding but this would probably get you a win or three)

Thanks! Blood Angels are my preferred army. We play at different points levels all the time (which may not help things), but a typical BA list for me incorporates "Slamguinius", Assault Squads (Melta guns), a full Death Company blob accompanied by Lemartes, and Dev Squads (Lascannon) in the backfield. Everything else is sort of in flux. I know I want the forward assault units and the heavy units in the back, but I'm never sure what to use for midfield objective holding/fire support. Never sure how to kit out a Tactical Squad, so I'm thinking of just getting Intercessors and trying those out. And they'd help fill out a Battalion Detachment to generate some more Command Points.

I might still consider SURPRISE KNIGHTS and just hope he doesn't play his Knights. Thankfully he at least asks if it's cool or gives me a heads up before he plays those.

I'm happy to keep answering questions because I love this book and will happily talk about it for hours but specifics are good because I expect nobody really wants to read 10k words of my undirected ramblings on the Blood Angels codex.

I certainly appreciate it, and it has given me a bit to think about. I didn't even realize Company Veterans were a thing, but I can easily see dropping the Assault Squads for some Vanguard Vets. I mostly stuck with Assault Marines out of habit, though they do tend to disappoint. May look into more tanks for fire support, I currently have a handful a Vindicator, a Las Razorback, a Land Raider, and a few Rhinos that could become something else with the right turrets.

A couple of questions:
-For Intercessors, do you tend to go with a minimum or a full squad? I'm guessing min sized to fill out 2 Battalions.
-Are Sanguinary Guard any good? I've only used them once this edition.
-Is there an effective way to use Mephiston? I keep wanting to put him in my lists, but I can't ever think of what he would actually DO.
-Which HQs do you use in your lists?

Question regarding Icarus Array vs Neutron Laser, my opponent most frequently plays Tau, so I am usually facing down a lot of models with the Fly keyword, would that make the Icarus Array more of a lock?

Edit: Also, could someone point me to a decent 1000-1250 point base for an army list? I know the adage is "Get what looks cool", but all of AdMech looks cool to me. Except the electropriests.
