And I assume that's why you mine and sell instead of mine and hold

What will these things be useful for in 2 months? Discount entry-level deep learning GPUs? PhysX GPUs? What's a no-output no-warranty 1060 6GB worth? $60?

Paul MaudDib posted:

An RX 580 mining card might be able to be used in CrossFire mode but since the 1060 doesn't have SLI fingers a card without display outputs is pretty much only going to be useful for compute tasks, whether deep learning or PhysX or whatever.
I've been wondering the same thing.

If I were a miner (and I'm definitely not, I'm just saying), I would only buy the ones with a DVI output:

ASUS MINING-RX470-4G

Sapphire Radeon RX 560 Mining Edition 4GB

I think this is Sapphire too I don't know

Do you not have a monitor with a DP?

I find it really weird they're now releasing 'mining' cards with just a DVI port.
I assume the decision was to have a single display output and of the available choices DVI was the cheapest (license fees maybe?)

If they have outputs, what exactly is the difference? poo poo if those are any cheaper than their "gaming" counterparts I dont see much reason to get a more expensive card with outputs you wont need

edit: I suppose its also protection for the manufacturer, if mining tanks then its not like they arent useful cards to sell

Paul MaudDib posted:

This is one reason I doubted the whole "mining cards" thing would ever happen. Why would NVIDIA/AMD give up a full-price sale of a second GPU and let you buy a discounted one instead? And mining cards with display outputs? That's literally just a price cut on whatever that card is.

There's a whooooole bunch of magical thinking on the part of AIBs with these mining cards. They make absolutely no sense to miners unless they are nearly functionally equivalent to a regular card, and at that point regular users are going to buy them too. If you gimp them too hard, miners are just going to buy regular cards as long as stock exists and only buy the gimped cards as an absolute last resort.

Difference of a mining board:
1. Optimized for hashes instead of FPS. I assume this means underclocked core + overclocked RAM, done by the manufacturer so you don't need to modify the firmware yourself. ASUS for example is claiming 36% higher hashes/s vs. an equivalent gaming board.
2. One or zero display outputs.
3. Little or no warranty.

This Biostar mining GPU doesn't leave out the display outputs but instead uses lower-binned "lite edition" silicon:

Ars writeup on the August 1 Bitcoin fork:

https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2017/08/why-the-bitcoin-network-just-split-in-half-and-why-it-matters/

Sounds like so far, it actually worked how they wanted it to. Before the fork there was BTC, now there is BTC and BCC.

The next big hurdle for BTC is probably the hard fork from 1MB blocks to 2MB blocks via the New York Agreement / SegWit2x, currently expected to occur in late November.

http://support.exodus.io/knowledge_base/topics/what-exodus-users-need-to-know-about-bip91-segwit2x-bip148-and-hard-forks

Currently 89% of the network is signalling support for SegWit2x:

Why are these big dumb dumbs selling drugs for bitcoins and then exchanging for cash when they could just be setting up direct bank ACHs so much more easily???

They think bank ACHs are much easier for the feds to track than bitcoin transactions because they are big dumb dumbs

Due to a bug, 1 million ETH (roughly $280 million) have become frozen in wallets, making it impossible to transfer Ethereum funds out of them.

So does that make that coin useless or worth more?

In terms of mining it makes anything that's not an ASIC useless, time to switch to mining other things

In terms of values of the coins, by law of supply / demand a sudden increase in supply should drop the price, but cryptocurrencies are currently inside a bubble and normal logic is not going to apply

Okay so I made this post in jest, but in the Trump thread of all places I just learned about something called “tether” which sounds like what I was joking about.

Can someone smarter explain tether to me. Because it sounds like some dude just decided to start a company and offer their own currency, which they totally promised is tied to the value of the dollar, and people bought into it instead of buying bitcoins directly for ???? reasons.
