there's no way the CEO and founder of the world's second largest advertising/marketing company with access to untold amounts of data about what people of different political leanings like to see and hear could possibly have a shot at the presidency he'll probably lose, but not before running a campaign so blatantly algorithm-driven and focus-grouped that it makes Hillary look genuine by comparison, and absolutely obliterating everyone in the primaries as a result

I doubt the centrists, who are all about being pro-business, would hold it against him. most of the people he donated to were up-and-comers who either held a lot of power or were on track to the right seems to be pretty forgiving too. hell, Trump was a Democrat for a few years - and Jeb even tried to use that against him in the primaries. no one's going to give a poo poo about Zuck's donor history

I posted this in the Trump thread but I just realized that Facebook probably loving loves the rise of openly white supremacist movements because it's a tremendous market opportunity companies that target their ads toward white supremacists via conventional means (like running ads on Breitbart or white supremacist sites, or running racist ads) face the risk of getting caught and seeing a backlash as a result. that makes neo-Nazis a difficult demographic to advertise to Facebook advertising is so much more targeted that it doesn't really have that problem hell, FB has already gotten in trouble once when someone noticed that their "multicultural affinity segments" could be used to violate the Fair Housing act by running "whites only" ads for housing

Zuckerberg says the state's cash handout program "provides some good lessons for the rest of the country." The dividend averages $1000 (or more) per person. "That can be especially meaningful if your family has five or six people," says Zuckerberg in a post he wrote about the payment. "This is a novel approach to basic income in a few ways. First, it's funded by natural resources rather than raising taxes. Second, it comes from conservative principles of smaller government, rather than progressive principles of a larger safety net," says Zuckerberg. "This shows basic income is a bipartisan idea."

I mean the Basilisk. not only did people believe it, but they thought that knowing about it would literally make it more likely to happen (since this hypothetical blackmail scenario doesn't work if the idea never occurred to you), which is why the sorts of communities that tend to believe in this stuff actually banned any mention of it. these types will often claim that they don't believe in the Basilisk, but they'll also prevent discussion of it and refuse to tell unfamiliar people about it in order to protect them from "memetic hazard", so I'm pretty sure they do believe it and just don't want to admit to having nightmares about a dumb philosophy trick

It automatically tries to recognize objects in photos and labels them with a list of what it believes they contain ("May contain: " etc.), and has done so for years. Ostensibly, it's for accessibility: letting blind people what's in all the photos that get posted. There must be something else going on, though same reason they're running facial recognition on pictures: to discover information and potential connections that people don't put into their text posts
