Sharks Eat Bear posted:It does raise an interesting question -- is this JR's worst move as the Pens GM? The MAF contract was pretty bad, but can be at least partially excused because of the expansion draft maneuvering and 2nd Cup. Otherwise, so far as I can recall, JR's track record with the Pens has been pretty bulletproof. Despres for Lovejoy was bad. It only looks acceptable because of two things that occurred after the fact: 1) the Ducks gave him a contract that the Penguins couldn't have afforded to give him without making significantly different moves than they actually did during the 2015 offseason (if you have Despres there's probably no Kessel deal) and 2) Despres's career is likely over after taking several headshots before he could accomplish anything notable with the Ducks. Max Lapierre and Steve Downie were pretty lovely too, and so was Mike Johnston. But yeah, the good far outweighs the bad, and there's a lot of offseason left and free agency hasn't even started.

Niemi sucks but if he wants to suck for maybe 20 games for like a million dollars thats probably okay, at least Pittsburgh can give him enough goal support to win a few games in spite of his shittiness too. Actually 20 games is a lot and thats about as many back to backs as they have so he'd definitely be playing them ruh roh

i went to game 1 against the rangers last year and man was that game weird as gently caress going in. sullivan had been playing shell games with his goalies so nobody knew who was going to start and you could pretty much feel the confusion in the air, and the subsequent butt clenching when zatkoff took the net. it was cool as hell when the crowd rallied behind him though, and zatkoff winning the game (and hornqvist getting a hat trick) was a good clue that their regular season magic wouldn't desert them in the playoffs that year.

eXXon posted:After taking a look at Marleau's stats over the last 3 years, he has not been especially good. Scoring rates peg him at a low-end second liner/good third liner getting largely undeserved first line minutes. He spent a bunch of time on the PK and was near league-worst in GA and CA/60 - almost as bad as Hyman, who has a completely undeserved reputation as a great PKer. Last season he barely managed to produce at a better rate than Komarov and Brown on the PP. When you think about it, Marleau's intangibles are actually perfectly suited to the Maple Leafs. Who else could better inculcate into the young ones the experience of spending your whole career playing for a blue team that, despite any hype surrounding them, manages to disappoint year after year?

Maybe he'll teach their young guys how to win because apparently all the other old guys on the Wings already forgot how?? Good lord, I know the Penguins aren't a team that has a lot of margin for handing out bad contracts but Dumoulin is pretty easily worth what he's asking and the team's offer is a hilarious lowball. They seem pretty boring but inoffensive I guess. It feels like they're really wasting a good opportunity, they made a deep playoff run and have probably never been more popular as a team so they come out with a pair of new jerseys that are totally unexciting.
