Tournaments can be tricky to book, because it's one storyline with a ton of matches, and the participants in this match are determined by the winners of two previous matches so you have to keep that in mind, etc., but it's been done.

Taintrunner posted:I know I'm mad late to the party but GLOW is really good. Like, I'm generally blown away by getting actual modern wrestlers to play retro wrestlers and getting like... Allison Brie... to do real wrestling moves. The TV Guide website has this great article on the one-woman wrestling scene. Kate Dennis, director posted:This move was tricky and we were careful to not have to do it too many times. I'd say Alison did it a total of about eight times. About twice per set-up (or shot). At no point did Alison say, 'actually this quite hurts. Can we only do it a few times?' She was extraordinary. I had to talk to [wrestling choreographer] Chavo and our stunt supervisor to get a true sense of the pain the move could cause if we did it too many times.

I've only watched the first round so far (kinda marathoning in hopes of catching up) but Piper v Garrett was the standout of Round One for me. Though yeah, Rhea Ripley was also very very striking. It's odd, though, I've gotten used to wrestling matches having that regular slam of bodies hitting the mat, and with the women being generally smaller than the average WWE guys the matches are a bit quieter. (And it did seem like there are maybe fewer bumps on average. Though I do like that this division is apparently dedicated to bringing back wrist holds as a thing.)

A major problem with the CWC participants going on to Raw was that, to me, the Classic was done in a different style than most WWE stuff, from the wrestling to the presentation it was more sports-like. When they went to Raw it was "WWE style", i.e. the same rhythm as all the other matches on the show, and something was lost in the translation. So far the MYC matches seem closer to WWE's traditional format to start with so it won't be as much of a problem going on to NXT (though the main roster will still be a risk because, well, it's the WWE main roster and they're not running it very well.)

Finished Round 2 and man it's a leap up from the 1st- it seems like either they had some people in the first who were still green or they were still feeling things out for some reason, but the matches are generally a lot more engaging.

DarkstarIV posted:Dave talked about the MYC on WOL yesterday, and had this to say about the finals (potential spoilers, you've been warned): Yeah, that's what I'm worried about- they're SO hyped about Shayna and MMA and 4HW, and honestly if she wins it all it kinda looks like "This MMA person can beat any of our so-called 'wrestlers'!" Especially since so many of her victories have just been "once she gets in the rear naked choke it's over". On the other hand they are really building up a potentially big Cinderella story for Kairi as the smallest person there and so peppy and enthusiastic, and she's coming in with about as much hype, so there's some hope.

It's a pretty good show up and down, really. They do a good job making everyone seem good (even Jetta looks entertaining as she jobs). Decent production for the most part, too, and the commentary is good for hyping all the matches. I'm definitely interested in their stuff now.

"I'm the best in the locker room" isn't really burying the locker room? Like that's what wrestlers say in character. Almost every one says that they are the best.

Caught the second ep of MYC, the matches weren't as good but there's potential. I also think Beth Phoenix came a bit out of her shell on commentary, first episode she barely said anything and was hard to distinguish vocally from Young, here she said more stuff and started to establish a personality.

Was quite impressed by most of the last MYC episode. Solid fights and I think they're doing good work making even the women who don't make it past round 1 look interesting. Jinny took some impressive bumps, reminded me a bit of Layla.

LaToya Ferguson's Encyclopedia of Women's Wrestling is out now and I'm enjoying it. It features 100 profiles of prominent women in the industry, past and present, and by its own admission is no means comprehensive. It's written in a very factual, uneditorializing manner, possibly to a fault at points (one could argue the Fabulous Moolah gets off lighter than she should), but it's committed to the professional stance.
