SHINee's back

Jennifer Connelly best MCU character.

Also this was a good movie.

I really liked how Zendaya was an 'MJ' but the roles seem reversed. Rather than Peter obsessed with/pining for Mary-Jane, this new MJ is obsessed/pining for Peter.

Idk if we're still spoiler tagging in here or if this is even worth tagging, but w/e.

Saw this last night, had fun. Keaton is def the best part of it. The part where Peter is picking up his date and Keaton answers the door is the hardest I've laughed at a movie in a long time, or at least laughed at something that wasn't supposed to be funny. Perfect comedic timing without even trying.

I wonder if it's a generational thing that Hollywood is now somewhat OK with casting people of color or some guy in an office getting a light bulb about how POC actors are now economically viable.

Say Watt?

Zendaya was already famous before the movie (I mean, she goes by only one name) and executives have always understood star power and popularity. Plus she's a Disney star and this was mostly a Disney movie. So at least her casting was an easy sell.

I liked that it made a few points of comparison, Peter and Harry were pretty much doing the same thing. 3 was pretty critical of Spider-man. Maybe that's why it's less appreciated.

The plot kind of suffers a bit from the "don't talk about uncle ben everyone is sick of it" thing. I mean the story is basically about Peter, an orphan who just lost his last father figure latching onto Tony Stark in an unhealthy way while fighting his girlfriends Dad. But it can't mention uncle ben.

I think they'd have mentioned Uncle Ben if they thought they had to.

They really didn't have to.

Yeah I gotta agree, I think they did well there by showing and not telling. You see him being raised by his aunt and you see him latch onto Tony for male guidance. You don't need to be explicitly told that a young teenage boy is craving a male role model.

Peter's slow walk from the car to the prom told you everything you needed to know about great power, etc so you really didn't need Uncle Ben

Okay so I hadn't actually finished Spider-man 3, I paused right when Peter ditches the goo in the church and had recalled the ending from years earlier. Turns out the ending sucks. Stop the movie there, it's not bloated it's completely undercooked. Maybe Rami could've pulled it together with a bit more running time, everything else was so top notch and by all appearances was building to something more satisfying.

I guess I'll just imagine a bleaker movie, Spider-Man, having killed the Sandman and disfigured his only friend Harry, is haunted by a dark reflection of himself, to be concluded next time in Spider-Man 4.

Also haven't seen homecoming yet but no uncle Ben is better then the jack-rear end we got in Amazing Spiderman

I think they alluded to Ben well enough, really. But it couldn't hurt to have driven it home a little better.

The only problem with adding more Uncle Ben is having to slow the movie down to exposit or flash back to that moment, and it's a moment like 90% of the audience knows about already as is.

It speaks to the difficult place that this movie exists in. It has to have the meta-awareness of being the third spider-man in a decade but also existing as its own interpretation of the character. This iteration is really putting a lot of faith in audiences being able to fill in the Uncle Ben part of the story themselves.

I think it's fascinating that out of the six movies we've since 2002 that only the first three have had Mary-Jane as a lead. Two Gwen Stacey and now Liz Allen (with a heavy hint towards a future MJ).

I had always considered MJ to be as core to Spider-Man as Lois Lane to Superman. I wonder if the general audience doesn't really see MJ as that way, or even Uncle Ben.

Exploration is ill-advised.
I realised suddenly in the comic book thread that Homecoming Spider-Man has kinda accidentally turned into a Marvel version of the modern Blue Beetle; an amateur teenage superhero with a bug-themed talking supersuit he argues with, being mentored questionably by older heroes.

Oh I see! This must be the Bad Opinion Zone!
Peter Parker discovering a motivation for being a hero beyond pleasing Stark and thrills is kinda the point of the narrative. It builds to the moment where Stark ditches him, he gets everything he wants, and is told to walk away. Working hard to establish the power-responsibility motivation prior to that removes the tension from that dilemma.

In hindsight, the fact that he needs motivation for being a hero is itself rather revealing - nobody is motivated to be a hero, they become such by necessity, and it's not like that's driving Spider-Man.

For the most part, Peter himself doesn't understand why we wants to be a superhero.

Peter expresses a desire to join the Avengers and do more visable superheroics, the ultimate end goal of which he believes to be receiving acclaim and approval.

But Peter being Spider-Man is constantly at odds with this. Being Spider-Man means being having to ditch your friends at the cool party, abandon your responsibilities to your school team, disappoint your father figure, and alienating your girlfriend--all on behalf of people who won't give him the courtesy to be intimated by his voice modulator. Ultimately, being Spider-Man ultimately means refusing to join the Avengers and the acclaim that would entail.

I think "drive" is a good word for it. Peter would probably be happier if he weren't Spider-Man, but he won't or can't choose not to be.

The movie assumes he is a hero already and doesn't mention his motivation because that's covered in his origin story. As shown in the previous episode film, he was already being a hero before Stark first found him. What happens in this film is him figuring out what kind of hero he can or should be and not letting the big flashy missions, other heroes, or high-tech suits get to his head and take away from the heroics he can do all by himself.
