I should point out that the base set on Nautilus looks very versatile, whereas on a lot of drops if you want to cover a full-size keyboard you pretty much have to get the base set, a modifier set and a numpad set which ends up costing about the same.

So yeah, if you just want to get enough keys for a TKL or 60% there's a bit of excess keys but once the drop opens and the breakpoint pricing kicks in it'll get a bit more reasonable.

Personally I'm done with buying new sets for a while, considering I've got one in transit and another still being nutted out.

OK, keycap porn - this is quite an old image, from not long after I got hooked into this stupid hobby. To begin with I got about three different coloured Tai-Hao sets and cobbled together this monstrosity.

If you've got a standard ANSI set, the Tai-Hao sets are quite suitable to start off with - doubleshot ABS (so they may get a bit shint) and I have to say I did quite like the chunky profile and the way I could put together an eyebleeding layout for not too much cost.

And as has been mentioned above, Tai-Hao have some interesting colour schemes to go with their single colour sets as well.

Finally got my Godspeed sets.

Kind of went crazy getting both the white and blue main sets so I could do this colour way. Going back to a full profile after the Danger Zone (which was all R3s I think) so it'll take me a few days to adjust but it looks pretty schmick.

I guess the Canvas set has been delayed again back to October, although the latest samples look pretty good so it'll probably turn out well. I think I'll have to get a second keyboard for that when that eventually comes out, I don't know the hell why. Stupid hobby.

It had me at lower-case legends (an idea which I considered doing myself though WASD's slightly bodgy printing service) on dye-subbed PBT.
Again, production delays kept pushing out this one, although it's a completely new setup so most of that time has been about getting the samples right. Anyway it's looking like it's supposed to now and production has been greenlit. Should release in October :gonk:.

https://mitormk.com/2017/07/08/mitos-updates-5/

Because of the delay MD have requested people opt back in (much like what happened with Godspeed), which is a no-brainer despite how long it's taken.

Ha interesting. Looks like this is partly a result of the development of the Canvas XDA set - there was a bit of messing around with that one until they got the result MiTo wanted but it seems like with the knowledge gained from that he's using the same manufacturer for these.

So it'll be quite different from the Godspeed DSA set that just got delivered (obviously, different profile, PBT, etc.), but def worth a look. It probably will be about the going rate for this sort of thing. Hopefully it won't take quite as long for whoever goes in it.

Yeah, the WASD or CODE keyboards have the "standard" layout (as in 6.25u spacebar, 1.25u mods, etc.) so you can pretty much take your pick of keycap sets out there as even the most basic 104-key sets will accommodate that. And obviously a good selection of Cherry MX types.

If you're buying direct from WASD, it may be a good idea to pick up some spare parts, most particularly some stabiliser inserts, maybe some springs and clips, because you'll be glad you did if you swap out keycaps and break one of the drat things because of your enormous trunk fingers. (Same goes for any other keyboard with MX switches.)

The other trick with the inserts is if they feel a bit loose in the cap, use some plastic wrap or something to make it a little tighter.

For people who want a nice PBT set for a standard layout board without spending heaps of money and then waiting 30 years for them, the Tai-Hao purple/grey sets might be worth a look. There's a few nice options, the black on black mods actually look pretty great.

I usually use something like cling film or some other thin plastic if stabilisers feel a bit loose. But the other suggestions are sound too.

Sometimes patent bitchiness goes the other way too. Not keyboard related (but Massdrop related) but I was hoping they'd do one of the O2+ODAC sets again but apparently whoever bought the design said "nope, no group buy sites ever".

Anyway I still like to check things out, sometimes it's not the price of the actual object it's the reduced shipping costs that make the buys worthwhile.

AFAIK I know there's a big long queue of orders for Signature Plastics which does most of the sets we see. Geekhack and wherever the Reddit keyboard people hang out do a lot of group buys as well. Lately it seems like Maxkey have taken up the slack as well.

Anyway I'm hoping to get my Canvas set by the end of the month. My god, no other thing I've done has made me think about my mortality more than ordering custom keycaps.

Nothing wrong with ortholinear, I think one of the reasons most keyboards are staggered is the typewriter legacy.

Anyway, in shocking news, the Canvas XDA caps are finally shipping! Probably still another fortnight before I get them myself but hey, I lived to see the day.

You might get lucky with the Godspeed SA ones though. Because they took so long to get done they had people opt back in or withdraw from the drop, but if I recall they didn't change the production numbers so there are probably a few leftovers. So you'll need to be on the button (and definitely work out your preferred sets beforehand) but it's worth a look.

I'm done with new cap sets for now but, ironically, because I got a discount code from another delayed set I went in on the recent WASD V2 drop with Clears (shipping was cheaper than direct). It'll be interesting to see how I like them after using Browns the last couple of years.

The profile is really flat, a bit of a change from SA, but pretty quick to get used to. There's a few variations in the sets I got (like I might swap out the red del key for the grey one) but basically, yeah. An absurd amount of time to wait but I'm glad I went in and I'm also glad they took the time to get it right.

WASD CODE
Das Keyboard 4

OK I guess I'm a member of the Clear Club now (on probation). The WASD v2 turned up last week but I've only just put some caps on it.

Obviously it'll take a week of working with the Clears but first impressions are good. However the WASD pitches a little more than the Das so maybe in a week or two I'll swap in the XDA set as they're quite flat compared with the DSA profile keys that I've put in to start with, as I've discovered that I like my layout to be pretty flat. Maybe I should get another computer to justify having two different keyboards that I like.

Apparently WASD are bringing in white cases - which you'll also be able to buy to retrofit as well, although they said something about needing specific tools which they've yet to stock.

I kind of think white would get a bit grubby but it could look good with the Canvas caps...

Yeah sort of thing is about par for the course for my long-gestation sets.

What doesn't help the problem (at least as far as the Mito sets are concerned) is MD is in the US, Mito is in Brazil, and the keys are being made in China, which is cool on the one hand but makes for drawn-out correction process where the guy goes this is wrong once he gets the physical test samples, and has to ring up the changes.

If you don't mind waiting, the results are worth it but, yeah, it's a drag.

Alongside the CODE the bog standard WASD might be the go, since there's no backlighting and Clears are readily available for it. Either would be good if you want to dress it up (or down) a little with a different keycap set since the function row are 1.25u all the way with the "normal" length spacebar.

Includes some extra sets in purple - I think I'll pass on that.

I should hope most of the production woes from the first round have been ironed out so it shouldn't take 12 months and make me fear for my mortality this time, etc.

The XDA profile is flat and slim - I've found it a really nice match for the WASD keyboard (which I found a little bulky with DSA caps).

I'd say I feel lost with the numpad, plus my desk stance is pretty wide so I'm not so bothered by the mouse real estate, but that's just me.

One layout I would like to see happen one day is actually a full-size but with an orthogonal alpha block, though admittedly that's pretty niche and weird.

I have finally set up a keyboard for work to put aside the default Dell chiclet one (which actually isn't terrible but anyway). There's kind of a don't ask/don't tell thing about people bringing their own keyboards in (none of the sanctioned ergo options really grab me), so I had to think about how to dress it down.

A while back I'd picked up a set of Winmix grey on grey keycaps in DSA because I'm all about flat profiles after getting accustomed to the XDA Canvas set.

So I just needed a keyboard to put them in. Today the Durgod Taurus K310 with Cherry Browns (I would've preferred Clears but anyway) finally turned up - decent price, build seems solid. While the factory caps were OK, I swapped those out immediately. I did appreciate that the big keys don't use bar stabilisers but rather have extra stems, so that saved a lot of time in the swap. Probably the cheapest keyboard/cap combination I've put together too.

Crappy phone pic. It looks boring as hell because it's supposed to look boring as hell.

The cap set included a red Esc key but I reckon even that's too showy for work, so I used a grey blank for the corner. It really suits the case colour well, it's all nice and stealthy (although noticeably different from the Dell) and hopefully the **KLACK** doesn't give the game away.
