It can be arbitrary, Kurt Vonnegut was considered sci-fi gutter trash for a good chunk of his career and when he shook that stigma off he was all of a sudden regarded as a writer of "real" literature.

And there's nothing stopping shamelessly genre books from being insightful, moving and complex pieces of literature. *sets "Days without hawking Book of the New Sun to strangers" board to zero*
