It's a piece of JUNK!
Korn album trip report: yeah, I actually kind of dig this. It feels like their first "real" album in about 10 years. It especially starts and ends really strong -- best album closer they've done in ages, even though it's short. Sprinkled throughout are a few mediocre tracks that sound like everything else they've done lately, but there's enough variety and raw emotion here that I'm looking forward to listening again, which hasn't been true for at least 2 albums. It all holds together pretty well and feels like it tells a story, even though I feel weird about praising that because of how tragic the story is.

The 20th anniversary edition of Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory was released today.

1) Holy poo poo, this album is 20 years old?! I remember listening to it when it first came out. Jesus, I feel old.

2) I still remember all the words. This is one of the few albums I can sing all the words to.

3) It's 6 discs?! 4 and a half hours long, wow. It includes all of Reanimation (which is excellent), the Hybrid Theory EP, a bunch of live tracks and demos, both old and unreleased.

In addition to the recently released Ohms, Deftones are rereleasing White Pony with a remix LP called Black Stallion. Supposed to be before the end of the year. I'm excited to hear what Black Stallion sounds like, and I hope the White Pony rerelease includes The Boy's Republic which is one of my favorite Deftones songs. Previously it was only available on the versions of White Pony with the red and black covers.

Hybrid Theory was one of the two first rock albums I bought for myself (No Doubt’s Rock Steady was the other) so yeah this definitely makes me feel old even though I got it a solid year after it’s release.

Also yeah Reanimation slaps, I think I listened to it more than both HT and Meteora and it is almost certainly a key component to my love of hip-hop today

It's a piece of JUNK!
Listening to the Hybrid Theory reissue, I'm struck by how the more hip-hop type stuff has overall aged better than the rock stuff. It reinforces my belief that they ultimately would've been better served by leaning on that stuff a little more -- at least artistically, maybe not commercially. In my head there's a better version of the album that's balanced a little differently. Then I realize it actually already exists and it's called Reanimation. (Still, "Step Up" really slaps.) I'm glad they eventually nailed it down on A Thousand Suns.

I'm surprised this still has all the same profanity edits as what was already released. I guess they either didn't have the originals or just didn't have the resources to remix them. It's funny because "X-Ecutioner Style" gets an Explicit tag anyway, at least on YT Music. The attached lyrics text have the swears even though the actual track doesn't.

An AI wrote a new Nirvana song called "Drowned in the Sun". I honestly wouldn't question that it was some recently unearthed Nirvana track if I didn't know better. Kurt's voice is a little bit off at some points, but it nailed the lyrical content and guitar style.

In my top 5 favs of all time. It was the album that introduced me to a concept of Music As Something More. The band now owns the master tapes for all their work, and they put out remasters last year (available here) for each LP. FP is the least different, because the original was such an incredible production feat for its time. They also pressed vinyls, but it looks like all of those sold out some time ago.

The vinyls are stupid expensive. I'm just glad that I was able to acquire an album in good condition. One that I could rip in FLAC so that time can preserve it. 'Fantastic Planet' is where art and music meets

Yeah, CDs are still useful like that. I'm kinda suck in 10-years-ago music mode and, most of the time, listen to my offline library of digital files. I'll use YouTube to check out new-to-me stuff, but I otherwise eschew streaming. Although I've used it in the past (again, 10-ish years ago) when it was more like internet radio tailored to your tastes.

I'm picking up some new CDs soon. I pre-ordered the Nevermind 30th Anniversary Edition (I also have Bleach and In Utero remasters and like them a lot), and bought some others along with it. Usually if I need something from Amazon that doesn't meet their free shipping requirement, I'll add on a CD from my list of wanted albums. The selection has been slowly dwindling over the past few years, that worries me.

In Deftones related news, Stephen has been doing play alongs of a bunch of songs on their YouTube channel for the past while. He's been playing a lot of underrated stuff, and has recently dipped into some b-sides and other rarities like songs they did for soundtracks.

https://youtube.com/c/deftones

Also Crosses, one of Chino's side projects, released a single recently that is a cover of "Goodbye Horses" by Q Lazzarus. Does this mean a new set of music is coming? Either way I don't really like this and I prefer the original song. A rare miss by Chino imo.

Against all odds, Korn has made 2 really good albums in a row.

Requiem is a bit short (9 tracks, barely 33 minutes) but it also doesn't really have any duds on it, though I'm still not really feeling "Penance To Sorrow". I'm also not in love with the mixing. But everything else about it is solid. It's interestingly sort of hopeful and striving for something positive even though it's still knee-deep in grief and heaviness.

Stabbing Westward released a new LP recently after putting out some new material via singles/EPs. Overall I think its pretty good although I do have some issues with it. The album version of Crawl is good, but I think the version from the Dead and Gone EP is much better. They also put out a song I liked called Killing Moon from the Hallowed Hymns EP which somewhat curiously didn't make it onto the new album. Also, the song Control Z has laughably bad lyrics. On the whole I think it is worth at least one listen by fans of their albums from the mid to late 90s or industrial-tinged alt-rock in general.

Word. This is 100% always the album I come back to when I want an example of a remix album that isn't just a cash grab. So much so that I honestly prefer it to the original by a wide margin. However, it also wouldn't have had as much impact if I hadn't already heard the originals on the radio 24/7. It kind of has the feeling of a really great concert. There's necessarily a little less angst because they're revisiting the songs rather than just totally baring their soul, and they gave themselves permission to go wild with electronics, instrumental variety, and playing with the song structures instead of making 3-minute hard rawk songs. It pretty neatly addresses all the things that I, personally, didn't like about the original.

I listened to Reanimation way more than HT proper, it felt like the only album that had the balance of hip-hop to rock that I really wanted out of LP and also had Hi Voltage and My December which my copy of Hybrid Theory didn’t have. It’s probably my second favorite album of theirs after A Thousand Suns

It's funny how scared they, or most likely their record label (I haven't extensively researched this), were of having too much hip-hop in the finished version of HT. The reworked version of High Voltage pretty much had all of the swagger drained out of it compared to the original EP, and even then it was only permitted to be a B-side.

I agree that Reanimation and A Thousand Suns are the 2 ideal Linkin Park albums. Obviously they're pretty different in a lot of ways, but they share a spirit of experimentation and willingness to take risks with song structures and stuff.

poo poo, i remember having the white pony promo copy leak off some audiogalaxy FTP server and it took like 3 months after i first listened to it until the retail was released.

the version i had had "back to school" (titled as "pink maggit"though) as the last track, and then months later when i bought the retail version upon release date, that song was replaced with "pink maggit" which has no actual verses on it and is like 4 minutes longer.

i was confused by that take; then months later they re-released the album with "back to school" as the first track and also it got a music video.

that song stuck out to me because Chino shouts out Kool Keith on it, and i was heavy into Kool Keith at that time.

also funny that the white pony track sequencing on the leak i had was exactly the same but the track titles were re-arranged.
(oh, this song you thought was titled "digital bath?" yeah that's not it. that's this other song.)

really wish i could find some info on this rip; discogs promo copies aren't even the same as the version i got.

edit: found it! i guess it had pink maggit and mini maggit at the end.

but check the tracklisting: "digital bath" titled "nightrider" but with digital bath song length (4:15)
