Grayson's got this whole "Man in the Iron Mask" thing going on. That pocketwatch sure is prominent, in both his main portrait and those development sketches. Maybe he was an early design for the clockmaker character that got repurposed?

Redd's mask looks kinda like Disney's Beast. I gotta wonder why he and Clay are victims. They're both casino employees and they're both in love with someone who designed part of the mansion. Is there something that separates them from the skull-mask playing-card servants? Is that why they have to die?

I have a feeling that there's some grand design going on, and the Marquis is enacting twisted justice for a number of terrible crimes, a la 12 Little Indians or something. Or perhaps each hurt him in a different way. Perhaps it has to do with his wife.

I think from Clay's bio, it sounds like maybe he did some dubious things while on the job. Things that his brute physique was useful for. No idea what Redd's deal is though.

I hope we get to get more conversations with ghosts. There seems to be so many ghostly blue flames around the casino. This place needs to call some ghostbusters already.

The thing is neither of them are Employees right now, they're just friends of the Marquis. Redd in particular is helping Greyson Grayson steal a priceless artifact.

I do appreciate that the game doesn't outright say it anywhere but Redd is in love with Greyson.

Also Clay basically beat up cheaters after they left instead of throwing them out immediately when he was head of security.

I'm going with the Lovecraftian interpretation of this and saying that the killings are all a giant ritual to resurrect his wife or something like that.

Based on Tequila's lore card combined with Boone playing for her, and possibly even the connection of "Lafcadio played cards pretty well" with "the servants are all playing-card-themed" (although that could easily just be due to the casino aspect) I suspect that "Lafcadio" Boone is actually Lucas Boone, the Marquis. Some sort of lingering mask magic from his is preventing the freed victims from recognising him as the owner of the place. His attempt to contact/bring peace to/resurrect his wife let in the gold-masked entity, and the game becomes his penance as he tries to undo the damage he has caused to his friends.

EDIT: I forgot to mention, great LP Scruffy! I hadn't heard of this one before, and although it's definitely right up my street I would definitely be disappointed by most of this so far. It's very pretty and a nice house of cards (pun not originally intended but I'll take it), but the fact that you only ever need to do basically one thing to stop each murder, Willow being the only exception so far, is a shame. Half the fun of a time travel game is that as you fix one thing, another problem pops up in its place; The Sexy Brutale is rather shallow by that measure.

On top of that, if you don't beat the game by solving all the murders in one super run either then that's another trick they've missed; sure, they might have a nice plot-themed reason why you don't have to in the end, but games are kinda supposed to be GAMES first, and they could certainly have tweaked all the timings so that you have just enough time to save everyone in one go. Thanks to the simplistic solutions, there's not even that many moving pieces right now:
- place the blank in the rifle
- switch the camera and turn it on
- douse the candle (definitely trickier since you need to feed the charm twice first)
- trick the pianist
- and turn the switch.
There's only two more solutions to discover, so it definitely feels like they could have switched up the timings of the murders a bit to make a one-run possible.

If I recall right from one of the videos, really loud noises (like records being played) stop Lafcadio from being able to utilize Trinity's power. If there is a way to save everyone it might involve setting up a record to play within earshot of Trinity. That way Trinity never hears the passcode to the door so she can't get trapped inside the same room as the giant spider. Instead, Trinity heads back to where Clay is and she manages to convince him to stop drinking before he gets to the spiked shot of liquor.

I think that requires less legwork on Lafcadio's part too, leaving him more time for the other guests.

Interested in following the LP more especially if you're planning on 100%+ it; the completion % I don't think accounts for any entry in the Secretes part of the journal, and even though I finished the game and got one of the optional things to boot, never got any entry in that part of the journal. That's my current thought. Perhaps Lucas is the "last" victim, whether or not he planned to die as part of whatever this plot is. Once he reveals what his intentions are and gives Boone his best "but you can't save everyone!", then we'll have the big scramble to save all the guests in one go leading to the big confrontation in the bar.

I'm curious if there are any ghosts hanging out in the Casino and the Chapel. Maybe one possesses the blackjack-dealing robot to try and warn Clay.

Tempest_56
Mar 14, 2009

So I've been doing the math on trying to save all the guests at once, and yeah, it just doesn't seem possible with travel time. Best I can come up with:

Start in the chapel: the blank is available at 1:35.
The gun becomes available at 1:55, and must be altered by 2:30.
Next, head to the music area. The murderer there will leave to check on the record at 2:15 - you've got to grab the record, put it in the closet, and then be ready to grab the key and lock him in.
Now you've got to book it to complete the Hungry Charm and be in the secret room. The candle becomes available at 3:30 and MUST be put out by 4:30.
Then - downstairs. You can get the CCTV switched over any time between 4:10 and 10:25, but this is a good time since you're down there.
The VIP statue can be changed after 3:05. Then it's down to grab the broken arm and switch that statue.
Next, run to the theatre. You've got some time here, but you need to turn on the breaker and then be at the second switch between 8:40 and 9:50.
After that, back down to the stairway area - you can flip the last statue any time after 8:50, but it must be completed before 10:35.

It's that opening section that's the trouble. I don't think it's possible to get Tequila's sequence done in time to complete the Hungry Charm, unless putting out the candle after Willow is hypnotized and leaves works. You could try doing the Hungry Charm first, but that wouldn't leave enough time to get down to the chapel to save Reggie.

I guess Lafcadio is a priest? Would make sense with all the cross gestures he does, and wearing a robe as well. Supposedly Lucas could turn to Lafcadio for salvation, but Blood Lady is dubious about us really being 'Lafcadio'. Hmm... this is a long shot, but maybe the person we're playing is actually a conman who tried to get everyone's trust so he could eventually pull off a big heist.

So we've got an idea of who the Bloody Woman is but no real explanation for the bloody rain that starts pouring down inside the mansion before the day resets. At first I thought spooky poo poo involving the Juju Guppy was behind what is going on but it feels like Willow's story is tangential or deliberate misdirection and Thanos has been picking up on what is going on more closely than anyone else so far, but once the mask was off he never bothered to go inside the passage Lafcadio safely opened.

No, once Willow leaves she's locked into her death. Moreover, the pipe will only pour out the water to put out the lit candle during her attempted takeover. She, Sixpence, and Redd/Grayson have the strictest timing for saving.

The solution likely involves the transport mirrors the servants use, and whatever architectural secrets Thanos's mask reveals.

In theory, since Tequila's body being dumped is what causes Trinity to panic and get caught in the spider web, saving Tequila would save Trinity. In practice you probably want Clay to leave the blackjack table to get Trinity anyway, so you can get rid of that poisoned drink that's left sitting there. That would be a King's-Quest-esque dick move, having that drink screw up your save-everyone run at the 11th hour.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

It seems impossible then - I forgot to account for the time it takes 7 of Clubs to walk to the closet. Unless you can get him to move before the cue that Scruffy showed off, you can't complete that portion until 2:45.

So to complete the Charm you've got to either 1) complete it in the roughly 1:30 between the two events, which would involve running across the room mid-conversation or 2) doing it in the same time before the gun in the chapel, which would probably be harder since it's more travel time.

If you're trying to go for the particular phrasing of "the god must be a machine", much in the same manner as "Carthago delenda est" (Carthage must be destroyed), then yeah, you need to use the passive periphrastic. Although for that to work, you'd need at least another verb there to pair with the conjugated form of "esse". So perhaps "Deus factus est machinam" or "Deus existitus machinam".

Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've had to actually form Latin sentences, so I can't recall if the passive periphrastic needs an accusative form at the end or a nominative. Quick googling says accusative, so my phrases up there still stand. :)

I dunno, though... With the exception of Reggie, it feels like everyone else has very ironic/appropriate deaths and it almost feels like that's... Required? I mean, not to pull the game apart too much but for everyone but Reggie it'd just be a world and a third easier to stab them when they're alone or poison them or whatever. I mean, how hard would it have been to just drop a cyanide capsule into Aurum's drink? And heck, Thanos, a very old very disabled man, was completely alone and vulnerable with a butler for some time. If the goal was simply to kill them... Seems like there wouldn't have been so much begrudging restraint. No... I think there's more to it.

In this line of thinking everyone but Reginald's death is thematic and kind of their own doing. Clay drinks himself to death while he ought to be looking after his wife, whom ends up in a bad spot because she's too nosey/picks a lock to a room she knows she shouldn't be in. The two dudes get killed on stage cause they're there trying to steal a giant jeweled egg. Willow is screwing around with voodoo magics. Runes and Thanos get cooked cause they're snooping and explicitly told they're not supposed to be in that area. And the singer... kind of... sings a petty and bitter song about Lucas who dumped her? Okay lost it a little there at the end, but a lot of the deaths are kind of the victims fault. Reggie getting shot seems to be a kind of weird outlier.
