He wasn't just running away from the staff, he was actively trying to accomplish something. But what that is hasn't actually been clarified at all... Sixpence is the most aware of what's going on besides the Blood Lady, Skull Mask and Boone "LUCAS! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!" "You don't know what's going to happen!" The Blueprints of the explosives in the basement were familiar but complicated. He's the only one to die before the crash in the garden (which is likely what happened to Lucas). "If only you were here earlier" He was possibly looking for the bomb controls. The deaths might have been unintentional but the fire itself might not have been.
