If you're trying to go for the particular phrasing of "the god must be a machine", much in the same manner as "Carthago delenda est" (Carthage must be destroyed), then yeah, you need to use the passive periphrastic. Although for that to work, you'd need at least another verb there to pair with the conjugated form of "esse". So perhaps "Deus factus est machinam" or "Deus existitus machinam".

Admittedly, it's been a few years since I've had to actually form Latin sentences, so I can't recall if the passive periphrastic needs an accusative form at the end or a nominative. Quick googling says accusative, so my phrases up there still stand. :)
