I've seen a paper extract that does some better research and claims that the encounter groups the psychologists just opened up an existing conflict between the nuns and the Cardinal at the time. The big thing in the priesthood is the repression of homosexuality. Many good catholics who had homosexual attractions did their best to repress them and what better what to repress is than to take a vow of celibacy? The attractions didn't go away though
