mate (pronounced mat-eh) is a type of tea, so it's kind of like a carbonated not-green-tea-ish taste. it's pleasant

i like drinking manhattans, they are like martinis, but with whiskey.

plus it's funny to order one and watch other bar patrons slowly copy me, my signature drink spreading through the lounge like a virus :getin:

to be fair convincing someone to pay €20 for an old granddad is American as gently caress :911:

why does everyone seem opposed to simply serving real drinks

i want to walk into a bar and have a menu that's like "old fashioned, martini, manhattan", and a whiskey list. maybe throw in some decent craft beers

would that really be so hard?

yeah the fancy cocktail list is to give you ideas from the bartender's style, special things they do there, otherwise why would you go there? you can make your own manhattan at home, but you can't make a flaming purple whatsit with obscure liqueurs and house-made syrups/juices. if you want a manhattan then order a manhattan and they'll make you one

What is a good cocktail bar in SF, preferably in the SOMA/FiDi/Mission area?

I don'tcare about ambiance, if it's a dive bar with a savant bartender I'm ok with that.

I usually go to the Hay Adams when in DC, they're kind of stuffy though and it took a long time for them to be like of he's one of those tech guys

so basically craft cocktails, loungey, willing to pay but anything more than 15 for a manhattan is a rip.

Smugglers Cove has good rum drinks, it’s their thing, also pirate themed

The View atop the Marriott Marquis is a bit pricey but their cocktails are decent and as they say they have a great view, you might also meet some interesting characters

I’ve heard good things about Alembic but never been there, also it’s far away

you could go to DNA Lounge

you could go to Japantown and go to “Dimples” (be sure to read the Yelp reviews so you know what you’re getting into)

lots of choices, and then there are plenty of restaurants that have decent to good bars too

The View sounds cool.

Last time I went to DNA lounge it was like, wall to wall people could barely move, do they have a sit down bar?

I know they had some back and forth about opening a pizzeria or something

Edit: lol @ the tenderloin blowjob bar suggestion. sounds fun for people watching but looks a little far from the bart for my taste

it feels like breweries and beer nerds are heading towards craft lagers as the next trend. it went ipa, stout, and we are currently in the age of the sour, but i think you'll see a big return of lagers (lagers, kolsches, pilsners, marzens, etc).

not to say ipas, stouts, and sours won't continue to be huge and crazy hyped but i've seen a lot of people starting to express a, "let's drink beer that tastes like beer" mentality. I think it's partially from fatigue with ipas, stouts, and sours but i also think it's a continuation of beer elitist mentality. oh you don't like lagers/think they're boring? enjoy your diabetes pastry stout pleb.

lagers will never have the hype, insane lines, or secondary prices but i think you'll see lots of beer nerds harping on people who don't appreciate lagers. john laffler, owner/brewer at off color and formerly goose island, predicted this trend in an interview because breweries overbuilt and have excess capacity.

i'm ok with this. i don't like super hoppy beer or sours. too often I'd be at "craft" beer places that had a bunch of hop glasses or a token guiness. then everything became like, 25% imperial soviet stouts and like, i like dark beer but i like having 2-3 over an evening, slow yer roll. so then i started mostly sticking to yuengling but being able to get something a step up from that would not be bad

once in amsterdam i got carded which was weird but ok whatever

it was this bar near my hostel apparently it was 21+ to keep out backpackers like ok i can relate. but the guy was fascinated with my american DL and america in general, so i told him how the subway sucks worse than bratislavas and he liked that

the place was kind of deserted so I asked if he could make a manhattan, he's like "oh yeah sure i just have to get my book!!!" in this really thick eastern european accent. (i didn't want to be a dick and ask where, all I could figure out was he was from not poland)

i don't know what he looked up, i think he gave me an old fashioned maybe but anyways he mashed up a sugar cube and is like super excited and then put in what tasted like orange bitters? or maybe it was normal bitters and the fact he literally stuck the top third of an orange (peel and all) into a wine glass

did i mention he poured all the whiskey and stuff into one of those big rear end wine glasses? yeah

but he looks at me all excited and is like "very good drink yes? like fancy american bar!" so i just kind of smilled and said yes, it is a very good fancy american drink, paid him ten euros and left

tbh it had a poo poo load of liquor in it and 10EUR was pretty cheap for the city center so i wasn't made but it was just very surreal.
