I imagine that from the ground it looked like the war was already lost and the only real question was whether you'd get to die at home in the invasion or die in somebody else's country. They don't know that Germany will gently caress up and try to fight a war on two fronts. They don't know if the sleeping giant will wake up and join the war. Even if they did know they'd know that after Dunkirk there are still five years left of the war and things will get worse for Britain before they get better and that the Blitz is just around the corner.
