It's so funny seeing that bill and the 5 hour set. First time I saw skril was 2011 at Summer Camp festival. He had a 60 minute slot. After like 40 minutes he ran out of material, so he opened up Ableton and just started showing off works in progress. He'd be like "oh this one's gonna be cool" then play an 8 bar loop for a minute or so.

They grow up so fast

I know this is the wrong crowd, but I'll never forgive Insomniac for what they did to Rothbury. Electric Forest is a travesty now lol.

In fact, I don't like what Insomniac has done to the festival scene as a whole. Just completely shut down a vibrant jam scene so they could instead rent some CDJs and underpay kids who don't know any better

Arms_Akimbo

I think ultra shuts down at midnight but there's afterparties all over the city until dawn

They do tend to end earlier then fests in the middle of nowhere that can amplify all night, especially on the last day

E: when I lived in Chicago I stopped going to North Coast after the first two years because it just got too big, but the whole city turns into a party for the weekend, there were a dozen great shows to hit every night without ever touching the festival grounds

His MPC skills are legit

Also DJ success is literally about who you know, so I always find this stuff hilarious. Anybody can throw their hands in the air and beat match a couple mp3s, you get booked based on who you know. The whole industry is built on it

The thing about people with a lot of money is they usually have a lot of time to play around and if they're into music that means they get good at an instrument. Their parents can also afford to own in-tune, working pianos so their kids are exposed to creating music earlier. That's why a lot of your more grassroots musical movements like hip hop revolve around more rudimentary things like sampling and tape loops, those were the tools and techniques available.

Unless you're completely committed, learning every little detail and nuance of an akai MPC to perform with it live is absolutely a luxury

Mister Speaker posted:

If you're not at least a little bit terrified while rolling at an electronic music festival, you're doing it wrong IMO.

I wish the Brothers would make more stuff like Exit Planet Dust, they really departed from that heavy breakbeat/guitar buttrock sound in the early 2000s and barely looked back. Their unique style of psychedelic prog-house is good, and very suited to long festival sets, I just want more aggression.

'Be the change you want to see in the world'; I've been bugging a guitarist buddy of mine to collab with me on some of that kind of poo poo but he's turbo unreliable.

They're still doing that, it just doesn't get exposed as singles.

Off their last album:

E: ^^ you're aware that Skrillex basically released one album over a decade prior to this year, yeah? He makes some good stuff but I don't understand where this superstar producer reputation comes from. He couldn't even cobble an hour of music together to tour with when scary monsters broke through. I love his work but c'mon. Excision, for example, has done more to forward that scene by a large margin and has just as good if not better synth and production chops

Coachella looks like a fake music festival they made for an episode of CSI Miami

Potions was good, dropped Supertask, Of The Trees, and Lab Group 2 ids. KC though, man. I don't know what these kids do at night, but the scene is so bad that Potions went on at 11 and Player Dave closed the night out because everybody just goes home at like midnight regardless of if the headliner's played yet or not. Shlump headlined a few months back and the place was half empty twenty minutes into his set. I had a smoke with the promoter and he's like "yeah we're just putting top bill on at 11 now, they were getting pissed at playing empty rooms." Bad scene, it's no wonder nobody plays here.

E: doors were at 9, 4 supporting DJs, potions went on at 11, it was insane and dumb
