What I thought Orbital had stopped a while ago. This sounds decent.

They did, they split up acrimoniously shortly after the 2012 Olympics. Then, being brothers, they made up and decided to make it work. They did a few festivals last year - the whole Bluedot performance is on YT - and gigs in London and Manchester last December. I was at the London gig in the front row, so have the dubious privilege of appearing twice in an Orbital music video.

If anyone wants a mint copy of the 3xLP set of the hall gigs, BTW, I have one that I don't need.

E: putting in vids for last year's releases.

I think it's safe to say "Leftfield was on point". There were only two of them and one quit before Alternative Light Source.

Decent album, that was. Much better than Rhythm and Stealth.

They're very Euro. But yeah, still touring and recording, although the drummer quit after the last album.

Sounds like she was making a lot of that on a C64 circa 1991. Observation, not criticism; there were some truly mighty musicians on that platform.

It's not like I'm incapable of being critical of artists I love, but there's nothing wrong with continuing to be excited by an artist sticking to a formula if the formula is solid and I've been a fan of that formula for a long time.

There's plenty wrong with an artist getting stuck in a rut, though. If you don't evolve your formula and your music over time, then you start to die.

Case in point: Orbital's track Satan, which has been a mainstay of their set ever since its release but has constantly been revised and now sounds very different.

The original (1991):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41vKKNzAbJs

The movie remix (1997):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofamFBk92Pk

"Dracula AD1972" revision (2002):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkl5qIi30yw

Beelzedub (2012):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwuAJ5QAbb0

The current version (2017-):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkQgXZxJ3PI

And that's just the major revisions. It doesn't include the extended "festival mix" played from at least 2009-11, the two alternate versions from the different releases of the 1991 EP, or 2001's Beelzebeat.

I wouldn't say orchestral adaptations of EDM have become a thing, quite, but it's been happening. There was a big show at the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago, Pete Tong did another at the O2 last December, and Orbital have talked about doing one for their 30th birthday this year.

I haven't listened to Moby in eons but anyone else enjoying his new single, Power is Taken? It's actually got me looking forward to his new album which is releasing in March, although I can see this specific single getting overplayed and making it on to every EDM work out playlist ever. It's got a very retro 90s vibe to it.

If by that you mean it's five minutes of a 10-second loop with a piece of sampled dialogue thrown over the top, I agree. Album isn't out until May, by the way.

That Hot Since 82 track isn't bad, though.

If everything goes as they want, the delayed Orbital 30 compilation of celebrity remixes and extreme deep cuts will be released in October (under the new title 30something)and the new studio album will follow in February. I really want to get to one of their two remaining gigs this year if I can now. They're guaranteed to be trying out a few of the new tunes on an audience, as they did with PHUK and Tiny Foldable Cities on the pre-Monsters warmup.

Oh, no, dubstep is still laughed at. It just stopped being perceived as something nobody listened to because it was bad and became what everyone with a tin ear was listening to because they didn't know better. EDM purists hate it because it goes WUBWUBWUB, dub purists hate it because it is to dub what dogshit is to dogs, and nobody else understands how it ever became popular.
