The Chainsmokers = garbage

I want to talk about/share EDM. More specifically, music that just gets labeled as EDM rather than house/electro/dubstep/techno/trance/drum & bass/etc. Other subgenres of electronic music have their threads in NMD, but I’m not sure this type of stuff gets discussed in those threads or in NMD at all.

Before you say it: I know this type of music isn’t for everyone, but it’s been hugely popular for many years for a reason and I want somewhere to talk about it and share it.

I’ve been going to EDM shows/festivals for years, and the feeling of being in a crowd like that (especially a sold out one) with hundreds/thousands of people all getting into the music and dancing together is unparalleled for me. Being connected to EDM feels like being part of an inclusive and welcoming family for me in a way that many other genres do not.

Let's hear about EDM artists you’re into, shows/festivals you’ve been to, artists you think are on track to really blow up, etc.

Also this Pierce Fulton track is probably one of my most-played songs on Spotify since I started using it last year :v:

And on the topic of Soundcloud (since the tracks you posted were on Soundcloud), what do you think the impending demise of Soundcloud means for EDM? I know a lot of the producers I've seen over the past couple years are either unsigned or on indie labels and they've gotten as big as they have primarily because they built a following through Soundcloud. It's the same way for a lot of newer rappers.

This is literally exactly why I said in the OP that I know it’s not for everyone but it’s popular for a reason lol

I know EDM isn’t everyone’s bag. Hell, a lot of my friends think all EDM is garbage and don’t even bother to check most of it out. But there are a lot of people who don’t have that attitude and enjoy listening to music that’s fun as gently caress and gets you hyped up even if it might not be the most artsy poo poo in the world, and that’s the type of stuff I want to share/discuss. Although after posting this thread, I realized that I don’t know how many people on SA would actually be into this kind of thing...

I dig Rezz but I have to ask, how does one DJ "destroy" another? All that really means is you enjoyed her set more but you aren't going to convince me that Rezz did anything technical to "destroy" mau5.
She was just way more exciting than him. He put on this really boring, by-the-numbers set without visuals or a particularly interesting setlist or anything, and then Rezz came out and was more impressive in every way. She's signed to mau5trap (deadmau5's label), but it's like she's a student that's far surpassed her teacher.

Again, excitement is 100% subjective. Just say you enjoyed her show and visuals more. I think you are talking about the Mau5Hax Bus Tour? Him having no visuals likely has nothing to do with him and everything to do with the venue and what they were prepared for. You are essentially putting up him doing a guestmix to open for her up against her actual show. Look at his Cube 2.0 show and then come back and tell me that "the student has surpassed the teacher". She hasn't. He has more going on in front of him in the cube than any other "DJ" out there.

More than other genres, you have to be really careful on how you qualify what you are seeing at a show. Not trying to be mean or snarky or anything but trying to save you from making some really bold claims that I don't think you want to make.
It wasn't that tour. It was an afterparty after a festival. I saw mau5 at the festival too (so twice in one night) and he wasn't very good at the festival either. Although he didn't have the Cube with him for either show, and the first time I saw him (in 2010), he was using Cube 1.0 then and that was one of my all-time favorite shows.

I don't think he has the ability to put on an exciting show without the visual component, from what I've seen.

Yeah, I agree. The Rezz album wouldn't leave my head and I've listened to it in full at least 10 times since it came out. The Slushii album was pretty underwhelming so I didn't feel the need to go back to it after the first listen. His non-vocal tracks rule. I wish he didn't feel the need to fill this album with vocals. I wouldn't say I don't enjoy deadmau5's style. I've enjoyed his studio stuff for several years now, and I enjoyed the first time I saw him a great deal. I just don't think his style translates well to a live environment all by itself, I guess. If it's the full A/V sensory overload package? Then yeah, I love it. But if it's just him without any real stage presence then it bores me to tears.

Any of Rezz's tunes get me pumped literally every time I listen to them, whether it's in my car or at home without any visual accompaniment. Some of deadmau5's tracks do that for me too (like all of 4x4=12, Strobe, I Remember, etc.), but most of those songs are at least 5 minutes long (if not double that) and there's a lot of buildup in them. Personally I enjoy progressive stuff (hell, post-rock is one of my favorite genres so it's not like I'm averse to long songs with lots of buildup), but Rezz's tunes have no padding whatsoever. They just get right to the loving point and I feel like they work better for the whole EDM live environment by and large. Obviously mau5 has a few of those too, but that makes up, what, 15 or 20 minutes of an hour and a half long set?

I've listened to the Ekali Awakening Mix Vol. 2 way too many times at this point, and I'm still not sick of it. Ekali did a really amazing job with it, and he maintains the right vibe throughout the mix.

Beyond that, I've been listening to a lot of Jai Wolf, and I'm excited to see him again here in a couple of weeks.
Jai Wolf loving rules. He doesn’t have a huge discography, but I feel like every tune he puts out is an instant classic. I almost saw him live once but I had to leave, so I’m bummed I haven’t gotten to see him :( I’m sure he puts on an incredible show.

Happy that Bassnectar made it in there as well. Love his stuff, first started listening in 2009/10ish and first saw him at a tour stop in 2011 in a sweaty rear end nasty club. I'm not one of those "follow Bassnectar everywhere he goes" types, but if he's at a festival I am, believe I'm at his set over anyone else. This year's NYE 360 was the first of his curated events I've seen and I was blown away.

Off his newest release, this song makes me want to jump through the goddamn ceiling.

All that said, I cannot loving stand ~*weird bass*~ crap like Space Jesus, Yheti, Toadface and whatever else. It's like, instead of trying to make music, they're trying to be edgy and make poo poo that sounds dumber and more bizarre than the next guy.
I started listening to Bassnectar in like 2006 when one of my high school girlfriends turned me onto Mesmerizing The Ultra. I bought it on CD. Then years later, it was very weird to hear that he was making a completely different style of music and had blown up and had this huge fanbase, but goddamn does he deserve it.

I could've sworn I remember hearing his remix of Ellie Goulding's Lights at the end of a movie I saw in theaters years ago, but now I'm searching to try to find what movie it was and I can't find it. I thought it was Dredd but that wasn't it. In any case, this remix owns.

The new ODESZA album dropped last night (their first in 3 years). It's really not grabbing me like In Return did :( I still play In Return all the way through at least once a month. It's just amazing song after amazing song after amazing song. This new one, though...it's not like it's terrible or anything, but the ratio of standout songs to meh ones compared to In Return is spotty at best.

For example, one of the best songs on here is Late Night, which they already released as a single months ago.

Aside from my excitement over seeing NIN, Godspeed and acts from other genres, on this lineup there's also:

Infected Mushroom was traditional psytrance and then they became...uhh, less psytrance? Or poppy psytrance? I don't even know what you'd call what they became. I also don't know what their newer stuff sounds like, because I haven't listened to them since Legend of the Black Shawarma and that was apparently a few albums ago. I'd assume it sounds like the poppier psytrance stuff they made on that album because that seemed to be the direction they were heading in. Their evolution seemed to be similar to Pendulum's, who started out as just a drum n bass act but then evolved into kind of an electro rock act. (Then Pendulum turned into Knife Party :v: )

They rule, but they aren't exactly performing at the same kinds of shows/festivals as a lot of other acts discussed in this thread, for the most part. Also most of their stuff is at higher BPMs than the majority of artists discussed in this thread.

I wish their fanbases crossed over with each other, but I can also see why they wouldn't.
