Bizarre yes, terrible no, I thought it really unique, inventive and quite impressive. Can't have been easy to do all that underwater and there were very long takes made to look like one long take. Nice to see something different attempted anyway before the mostly routine though entertaining 80s action fest that the rest of the movie was.

I don't know how uniquely Chinese the patriotism is in the movie, like you could almost just swap the Chinese for Americans and change the flag and you'd have something pretty close to a jingoistic American military movie.

e: ^^ Wow that Red Sea movie is now the 2nd most successful Chinese film. They really are embracing their 80s rah-rah action film era over there

I think some of the more patriotic scenes would feel off if they were put in an american movie. I am mainly thinking of when they realize they are actually under attack and take off their unit patches and put on the Chinese flag patches.

I am thinking of things along the lines of No Country for Old Men or Hell and High Water, but I'd also be happy with things on the pulpier end of the spectrum like Walter Hill's Extreme Prejudice.

Small Town Crime is pretty good and is free on Netflix now. I would also highly recommend The Proposition, it's one of my favorite movies but is beyond bleak.

Kill Zone 2

After having just watched Debt Collector 2, I wasn't really feeling Louis Mandylor as a "bad-rear end", tough, yes, but after this - man, he plays a great bad-rear end mother fucker.

It has everything an action movie should have, including having a priest declare you a weapon of god and go loving kill everyone and a training montage. It has some plot holes to keep it entertaining, and some fights just aren't long enough with some of the main bad guys, but there are a lot of them so to be expected, you still get like a 20 minute "climax zone" leading up to the end. 3.5/5

Also directed by Jesse V. Johnson, who now I'm a huge fan of. It's really cool that all these Stunt guys turned out to be amazing directors, seems to get to know a lot about the shooting the process

I mean I'm just going to assume you've seen Dredd but have to point of the obvious.

There's also The Night Comes for Us and Headshot with Iko Uwais if you wanna go all out crazy - highly recommend the former if you're in that mood - from the same producers/directors/whatever of the raid films if I remember right.

I would also recommend the Keanu directed/starring: The Man of Tai Chi. It's got a cool 80's/90's feel to it. It's got some amazing fight scenes throughout and the story is good enough. Tiger Chen is lethal

I love Dredd, I managed to see it opening night at an imax theater. I like headshot a little better than The Night Comes for Us, I think the gore is a little too much but it still has some amazing fight scenes. Watched Kiss of the Dragon for the first time in like 15 years last night, good action but pretty misogynistic which made sense when I saw Luc Besson wrote it.

If you haven't yet, check out Warrior on Cinemax. I can't figure out how Cinemax tapped directly into my brain because combining the producer of Banshee, director of Fast 5 and the writings of Bruce Lee is pretty my my dream action fantasy.

Batman Begins is a huge offender to me too. It's not even cut THAT badly or particularly hard to follow (and the staccato-ness of it matches how Batman is generally working by dropping in and out of sight and quickly taking out folks), but like, they were really talking up the keysi fighting method bullshit and how they put in a lot of work to use that with how Batman would work to make a unique fighting style and stuff and like, if you committed that much why would you not show it?

I think they don't show it because it actually looks really stupid. A friend of mine actually went and lived at the monestary that developed it and the entire style pretty much revolves around holding your head and doing elbows

B-Rock452
Jan 6, 2005
:justflu:
The only time Keysi looked ok on screen was mission impossible 3 when the bomb gets activated in Tom Cruise's head and he is grabbing his head in pain while fighting. And I am not even sure if they were purposely using it or just scripted the fight scene around him being in pain.

So I think what Jackie Chan is really good at is knowing what he is good at when it comes to stunts and fighting/choreographing an awesome scene around it. His really good fights have a flow to them that requires the camera to be zoomed out to have an actual appreciation for what he is doing. Matt Damon might have known the moves and been able to do them well but the Bourne movies were shot in a way where the fast cuts made sense (and even then I don't think they were that bad).

Now the taken movies are an example of horrible cuts to make up for the fact that the star is like 90 years old with no fighting experience.

Just watched Seized cause I love Scott Adkins. Definitely recommend it and had some sweet fight scenes. My only complaint with his movies is he really just needs to spend a few days with a firearms instructor, I really don't need him to go full Keanu and I know I am being pretty pedantic but it's generally pretty clear he has no experience with guns. That being said the movie the movie rocks

Not having a go because it's a long way from my expertise, but what did he do to show that?

Honestly and again I know I am being pedantic but it's a lot of little stuff that kind of adds up. Oddly enough with Seized it kind of almost made sense since it was a little better in that some of his movements and techniques were being taught like 15 years ago which worked with his character in the movie. But stuff like him putting spare rifle mags on his strong side and how he moves with a pistol stand out. (He never goes to the sul position and is generally very stiff with it)

Again the movie rocks (and god I feel like a huge dork now)

Oh yeah the standard has definitely been raised over the years. Honestly I think it more stands out for me with Adkins because with his art of action series it's clear how much he cares and trains to make his action scenes kick rear end.

I love the Raid and Raid 2 and all the other movies done by those stunt teams but Night Comes for Us is just too much and I am just exhausted by the end and not in a good way. I think the Art of Action with Gareth Evans kind of explains his views on violence in movies, he mentions cutting fast away from a horrific injury and that makes the action effective but NCFU just lingers on it and I just don't like it. Which stinks cause the fights scenes are insanely well done.

It was too "agro" for me and yeah Iko was way too underused. But the part where Walberg tells a guy "there comes a time in every man's life where he must raise the black flag and start slitting throats" just seemed way too off a grunt style shirt (mainly because they literally sell a shirt that says that)

I like Berg and he can shoot action well but he needs to get off the Mark Wahlberg train and make some new stuff.

Funny you mentioned this, since I myself just started watching it. I'm on the second season, and it's wildly different from the first. So far, the second season is a lot more fun, for sure. The first season is kind of more a spy-type thriller with some unexciting to middling gun action, but it's not horrible. On the other hand, the second season doesn't seem to have Jodhi May, so it does have that flaw.

I actually haven't seen the first season, I think cinemax calls it Strike Back Origins. After the second season the action really ramps up as well, you can tell they did a ton more training for the guys as well. If you want a pretty good example of what combat pistol training looks like now, watch Stonebridge, the actor does a really really good job with it.

The final few seasons with a new cast are pretty good as well but the main characters really don't have the awesome chemistry that Scott and Stonebridge have
