No, she just wants to show off her tattoos. The Mass Effect 3 design at least covers her boobs, it's not terrible, but nothing excuses that original design.

Yeah, "Jack the edgelord" was boring. "Jack the former edgelord TRYING to be a good role model for kids" was actually kind of amusing.

the problem with characters like Jack is they weren't good enough writers to make me believe she would want to dress like that, in space of all places where the environment is so dangerous. I just think the writers and designers made her dress like that because they thought it was hot so it comes off creepy.

on the flip side of things, I am fine when designers admit they design characters a certain way because they think it's hot. At least it's honest.

Jack's also the most powerful biotic in the galaxy so her barriers are stronger than any armor.

This doesn't work in gameplay obviously.

Alias from D&D's Curse Of The Azure Bonds with her ridiculous cleavage window armor was a great example. They used this art over and over and over in magazine ads and on the cover of the novel and the tie-in computer game and RPG module and posters etc etc etc

The reasons they came up with for her to be wearing it in the first place and then to continue wearing it were super thin:

quote:

- This has been handwaved as either ceremonial armour, or to allow those controlling her through the eponymous azure bonds to kill her easily if she showed signs of rebellion. The image has been used throughout Dungeons & Dragons media and the spin-off computer game, Curse of the Azure Bonds.

- In the game modules, the armor is enchanted and either extends mystic protection to the open area, or the armor protecting her chest is invisible.
A later novel in the series finally offered an explanation, saying that the armor was made by a vain sorceress who wanted to show off the goods, and did add a protection spell covering the "window" to keep it from being a liability.

- The entire thing was lampshaded when Alias guest-starred in the Forgotten Realms comic book in 1989, and the halfling Foxilon Cardluck had the following exchange with her:
Foxy: Uhh... Doesn't that armor get drafty sometimes?
Alias: It's enchanted.
Foxy: (under his breath) Oh, I'll just bet it is.
The art isn't even that good - the poses and the entire composition and her expression are really awkward and stilted, the artist clearly has no idea how chain mail works, the 'azure bonds' tattoos on her arm which are the central conceit of the entire novel are mostly covered up, etc etc..

The tiny novel cover in the bottom left corner actually seems to have an earlier version of the painting with a different design, with the anatomy of the lizard guy and the design of his sword being the most notable changes. It also looks like Alias' cleavage window was slightly smaller so I guess the artist got told to make it bigger, lol

Exploration is ill-advised.
The late 00s and the 10s were probably the worst for games trying to be Very Serious with devs who have no idea they even need to try to maintain a consistent tone, and as a result ends up sillier than sincere camp and cheese.

I don’t know where that list of explanations is from, but the last time I looked at the Azure Bonds novel I believe it stated in the text that the ceremonial armor that Alias is depicted as wearing in the cover intentionally has a gap there. Why? Because it’s for Alias to wear when she’s about to be sacrificed, the hole is literally so a dagger thrust can easily pierce her heart as part of the ritual.

Easily pierce her heart? Through the sternum?? The people who wanted to sacrifice her either don't know poo poo about how to get to the heart properly or lied about their reasons for the gap!

Jack's design hovers around a plausible (or at least plausibly deniable) "trauma survivor expressing bodily autonomy" thing, which is something at least. Or maybe that just makes it worse.

Yeah but at least they play the option of loving the evil space succubus ok and it just sends you to the death screen instead of going in about your magic space genitals saving you or whatever.

Nope, turns out loving the succubus is a bad plan.

The main issue with Jack's design is they didn't lean into it hard enough. Like she's way too clean, conventionally pretty, healthy and not hosed up for the traumatised half feral punk look. Should have given her some gnarly injuries from her hosed up life and some off-putting but cool future body modding. At the very least she should have hosed up teeth and skin given her history. So all up she just looks like she's going clubbing. Not like. A fugitive half feral murderer who was subjected to human experimentation as a kid.

That all said, I felt her 3 design was great and worked for where she was.

yeah Jack looked more like she stepped out of a 90's World of Darkness rule book representing a hot Brujah, rather than a trauma survivor.
