Unrelated, what does Top Cow even own? At first I thought they were the company that did mostly licensed properties, but the Turok talk made me realize I was probably thinking of Dynamite, so I have no idea what they publish.

For the last few months I've been reading the 80's runs of Moon Knight and now Thor. I absolutely love the old school coloring so much more than our modern day coloring. Yeah, we have more colors on the page, yeah we can get stuff "realistic", we can do cool stuff with filters and poo poo. But using those gorgeous flat, limited pallets really brings something out in the art. I love it.

You should read the Bill Sienkiewicz New Mutants, he drew most of the Moon Knight you're talking about.

Are signed trades worth more money than normal ones?

I was looking to sell some old stuff and 2 of my trades from Mike Carey's run on Hellblazer I realized he'd signed inside the front cover, there's no personalization, just his signature I imagine he did a signing at the store I bought them from and he'd signed some of their stock while he was there.

X-Statix and X-Force by the same guy are generally considered solid reads, right?

Also, does Werewolf by Night fit into the wider Marvel continuity at all? A local store was having a buy 2 used trades, get 1 free sale, so I ended up picking up the Essential Werewolf by Night--just curious if it's any good. I read the first issue in the volume and thought it was alright.

It's in continuity unless something gets retconned, that should have Moon Knight's first appearance, which is then followed up in Moon Knight's first solo series. I think all the Marvel horror stuff is considered in continuity, it just doesn't get followed up on very often.

If J. K. Rowling announced that she was going to personally write Harry Potter comics that would either bridge the gap between Deathly Hallows and Cursed Child or tell new stories set during Harry's years at Hogwarts, how big would that be? Could it pull off a "one million copies sold" like Star Wars #1 did a couple of years ago?

Deathly Hallows sold 8.3 million in 24 hours. I think it could do it.

Endless Mike posted:

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Harry Potter comics would sell well, but not *as* well as you might expect. The people who would buy HP comics are probably going to "non-traditional (i.e. not white male)" buyers, so it will do well in trade and digital, maybe not gangbusters in the direct market.

You're saying Harry Potter isn't that popular among white males? The story of the white kid who was constantly bullied the first ten years of his life only to discover he's the chosen one to save everyone isn't gonna be popular among stereotypical nerds?

Gaiman said they both probably ripped off T.H. White.

I remember telling someone that Rowling based Harry Potter on Tim Hunter and despite being a comic fan he thought I meant the hockey player.

There's a bunch of people who think Books of Magic is a rip-off of Harry Potter (because they don't understand linear time).

That's a loving amazing article, there are zero sources for anything at all, literally the only established fact is that Disney owns Marvel and comic books don't make as much money as movies, so the conclusion is Disney is going to stop making comic books? Nevermind that before Disney owned a comic book company they licensed out of their own IP for comic books. Also nevermind that buying an IP farm doesn't make a lot of sense if you're going to say "we got enough IPs shut the whole thing down."

man, I'm starting to think that Marvel shouldn't have made Captain America a nzai

I don't think the core concept of temporarily making Captain America a Nazi as a way to reflect how America the nation's actions don't always match up to what we claim our ideals are (Squirrel Girl had a funny bit where that happened for a second due to reality altering hijinks), but it should have been an arc that lasted 2-3 issues max, not 18 loving months from Nick "I got fired off Ultimate X-Men because it was too loving convoluted" Spencer.

Seriously gently caress his Ultimate X-Men run, it features wide scale breakouts in Mutant concentration camps and Kitty Pryde in a thought box saying "this is the story of how I become the most wanted terrorist in America" in the first issue, and then goes off on other tangents for 11 loving issues, I'm not sure Kitty Pryde is in any of those other issues.

Aside from Alias, Most of Ennis' stuff and Jason Aaron's Punisher, is there any other good Marvel Max comics, granted what I've listed gets you probably at least a hundred issues of great comics, but it's also literally only 3 writers with 3 main characters.

I'll check those out. Looking at a list of MAX titles I'd forgotten about Rawhide Kid, which if I remember correctly didn't really have any "adult" content, just a bunch of terrible jokes about the main character being gay, and was probably on a MAX title because the main character was gay.

Trades, especially DC's, used to be kind of perfunctory. They'd mostly collect stuff they thought would move best in bookstores. It's why Vertigo's trade program was way more robust than the DC superhero universe's. It's only relatively recently that we've had these all-encompassing collections, hell often all you'd get would be the first arc of a series.

Vertigo has some problems too, Sandman trades have issues out of order, I feel like it was only in the past decade you could get anything more than first 8 issues of Jamie Delano's run on Hellblazer in trade. It just jumped straight to Garth Ennis more than 30 issues later. I'm not even sure if Hellblazer 51 is available in any trade, and that was the one that established him as bisexual, which my understanding is they've made pretty important to his recent stuff (it's a one off issue by a different writer that happens in the middle of Ennis' run).

Sad to hear they killed essential, in some ways I prefer the black and white, really highlighted Kirby and Ditko's excellent line work, and it was fun also having phonebook sized collections (do people younger than me even know what a phonebook is? They still end up on my doorstep occasionally).

Unlimited is great they still have a lot of holes in their older stuff, but they add a dozen or so old books every week (when Jay and Miles covered Xtinction Agenda, the X-Factor books weren't there, now I think almost all of X-Factor is) and if it was a non-Max comic published after 2000 it's almost certainly there. Only other complaint about it is they don't seem to have a consistent policy on where they list books that start with "The" and crossovers are a bit of a pain all the issues were there, but it was a pain in the rear end reading Xtinction Agenda.
