I have been extremely vocal and calling people out about it and there are other younger members moving or acting against that trend. It is almost 100% too little too late, there's just such a strong current against socialism of any flavor for any reason. The current view prevailing in academia is capitalism great, socialism bad, no matter the facts. Critical thinking has died.

It takes strong leadership, willing and comfortable to be hated/disliked, to accept a huge sacrifice in the present for the good of the future.

That kind of leadership is rarely on display today.

Which is weird because as a civilian scientist in academia in the hard sciences we are pretty pro socialism (all our funding depends on federal agencies).

A lot of Cheddar Cheesebrain's actions have provoked equal, if not greater, counter-reactions. When he talked about "American Carnage", the Women's March came in the day after with incredible turnout. When the muslim/immigration ban happened, people (and lawyers) flooded the airports. When they came for healthcare, floods of people came to town halls to yell at their Congresspeople over MONTHS to lead to a stop to it. When he stated the transgender ban using twitter, the defense department and even Congressional Republicans (amazingly) told him to go gently caress himself. They're even getting cities across the country to tell DOJ to go gently caress themselves too about a sanctuary city/immigration crackdown. gently caress, there isn't even a wall yet.

Today, a whole bunch of Nazis, white nationalists, and militiamen showed up in Charlottesville with a fuckton of guns, fake armor, bullshit camouflage and a bunch of hateflags. Even more protestors showed up and told these heavily-armed men to politely go gently caress themselves too.

All that's happened is that the same racist motherfuckers are getting more noisy and dropping their masks and hoods. The problem now is that there are cell phones everywhere, the assholes can be identified and fired from their jobs for being Nazis, and counter-protestors are STILL showing up with even more people (granted, antifa takes it a bit too far, but whatever).

So look beyond the Cheesebrain and some very positive things are happening.

If you want a real mindfuck watch the 'Oklahoma City' documentary on Netflix. It goes through Ruby Ridge and Waco and the related protests before, during and after. It's uh... discouraging to watch and feel like the exact same things are happening right now with a lot of the same people (or their direct descendants) involved.

And while I do believe in climate change based on little to no effort, observation, or research conducted by myself, the real world effects of false economic constraints have historically been incredibly dehumanizingly murderously awful.

Shifting geographical and agricultural constraints have also been quite awful. Guess we have to decide which is worse.

You can like or dislike the reasoning for Manning's pardon, I personally didn't like it, but let me know when Manning develops time travel and goes back in time to put all of her political weight behind Obama during his campaign so that her pardon is the result of oligarchic quid pro quo.

Manning's sentence was commuted after serving 7(?) years in prison. Different from a pardon. Could argue that she deserved more time, but she did serve a good stretch of time for her crime.
