So you have to die at least once before you can 100% the game? That's kind of a dick move, does it matter where you actually die in order to get to the Beach of Souls?

You can die at any point in the game and you'll still end up there.

Dying unlocking a thing kinda reminds me Conker's Bad Fur Day. There it isn't necessary to 100% anything but it unlocks the lives system and makes extra lives appear in the world.

Now that you mention it, that is the only other game I can think of where there is extra world only if you die.
Speaking of which, that whole part after you collect the lanterns seems very arbitary. As if it had bigger significance and some point but was mostly scrapped.
