True story, I bought an ATI video card that came with a serial number for a free copy of HL2. But then the source code leaked and the game didn't launch for two or three more years and by the time I went to scratch off silver lottery ticket covering that was covering the serial code, it had dried out or something and the coin scratched off the serial number too. So I had to buy HL2.

I played hl1 for free on my old windows 98 pc, and I remember I jumped when I had to bring the Titan towards the electrified fence. Then my c: disk got corrupted and after reinstalling windows I was like "oh gently caress I didn't finish Half Life... Do I want to go through the slog of the flooded power plant and the silo with the giant tentacles?" And answered myself naaah.

I would never pre-order a game (without a good discount) because I've played about a billion online-only games and launch days are always shitshows. Playing a day later is where it's at. All the spergs will have already started complaining about lack of content, been ranked out of normal people's matchmaking, and soaked up all the launch day network stuff.
