Once I saw a trailer with Mario entering into a slow motion overwatch reaction shot I knew this game was going to be promising.

It seems like status effects might be a pretty big deal, especially if immunity is a unique ability. Also it seems like AOE is much more common and can more easily hit more targets, which should give this a very different feel from XCOM. I saw some gameplay footage with Peach and she has a blunderbuss attack that hits a cone with an area of like 32 tiles. If that's her basic attack then wow

I don't expect this game to last nearly as long as XCOM, and the time value there was not so much in an individual campaign but because of the huge effects of variance within the missions and character death, neither of which this game has. (I assume, I don't picture this as the kind of game where Yoshi can be permadead but who knows) But 20 hours seems like it would be pretty solid and I could see myself going through the campaign a second time on a higher difficulty

Uh, well, if you didn't think the premise of this game was absurd on its face, this intro cutscene is really something https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGklUPdeEe8 The cosplay Rabbids are literally cosplay Rabbids because they were merged together by a device created by an Earth scientist trying to solve the energy crisis with a bunch of Mario memorabilia lying around in her workshop

Mario has always been fighting wars, always to prop up the rule of various monarchs, for decades. I assume he also enslaved Donkey Kong in that one game, so this is not that surprising actually

Tender Bender posted:I was thinking about how if this game does well it will be a pretty positive boost to the Rabbids IP and a smart move by Ubisoft to shove them in there. And then the cynical part of me realized that the "one rabbid must be in the party" thing is probably because of that. Play with a rabbid, they grow on you, then you're wanting rabbids as an assist trophy in Smash. Rabbids and Sonic fighting in Midgar in a first-party Nintendo game on the Switch would be surreal

XCOM 2 begins with Operation Gatecrasher, a mission where your resistance movement blows up a gigantic statue dedicated to the alien overlords. Because a monument like that is a symbol of dictatorial domination and XCOM is dedicated to fighting it. MRKB begins with... oh.

Been playing on and off all day and just finished 1-7. Yeah, I get what people are saying about the movement being important, seeing how dashes and jumps and pipes can let you travel far beyond what your initial movement radius looks like has me thinking about the battlefield differently compared to XCOM. Also the lack of distance penalties and the shot chances always being 0/50/100. It definitely feels streamlined compared to XCOM but it doesn't feel simplistic, and I have a feeling it will get even more robust down the line. I'm having a lot of fun!

Yeah vamping enemies and letting your whole team top off by shooting and dashing is great and maybe better than a dedicated heal

There have been a couple times near the end of World 1 where I inadvertently let a character die and I restarted so I could get the Perfect. Then I learned that it's really easy to access detailed enemy info, down to damage and tile movement, through the Tacticam

I have been working my way through the World 1 challenges and they are fun. Just discovered the secret stage too! If this game is 20 hours (which is a perfectly fine length) it feels like it will be a jam-packed 20 hours

The world 1 challenge with a bunch of minibosses and chain chomps was the first time I felt pretty frustrated with a battle. The chain chomps were really hard to predict and there would be some enemies that had the target indicator but they wouldn't go for them (probably because of distance), and enemies being able to spawn and move and attack right after the chomps felt pretty bad. I only managed to eke out a win after a couple tries because Rabbid Luigi is ridiculous

Shyfted One posted:I love the combination of Mario, R-Luigi, and R-Mario. I just have to start being careful now as R-Mario's damage can kill the other 2 with his hammer and shotgun. I was actually about to say that I just got Rabbid Mario and tried him out, and I am wondering whether anything will get me to switch from Mario/Luigi/Rabbid Luigi, they so perfectly complement each other and cover all the bases. Rabbid Mario's friendly fire makes him more finicky to use and I don't like his secondary abilities

Hmm, maybe I'll give Rabbid Mario another shot on this map I'm stuck on, it's close quarters with no high ground and Luigi's low HP is a liability with all these smashers. This game is actually more difficult than I anticipated. If I were playing on ironman this campaign would have been over long ago. At first I was restarting to get perfects, now I'm restarting just to survive

I think Peach (Actual) is my favorite character so far. Healing jump, grenades, scattergun, overwatch, and AOE protect. The other characters usually have one ability that is super situational or just a dud but all of Peach's are winners I voted for Yoshi "Explosive Head" Munchakoopas in the poll though so I'm looking forward to him as well

Chain Chomps are a real pain in the rear end. Unlike everything else in the game it's hard to know exactly what they'll do. How many tiles can they move? I have seen enemies with the chomp icon and the chomp will not have enough movement to get to them, and sometimes I have seen an enemy with a chomp icon literally adjacent to it and it will not attack. Yet when I'm the only thing in range it really feels like they move eight tiles to hit me

There's specific "reach the zones" ones later that have to be done in one turn and require specific movements and order to complete. It basically just tests your understanding of the game mechanics. If respecs weren't free I would be really angry with the challenges. The dev that decided they should patch that in at the last minute is a true hero
