crashplan is phasing out their consumer segment so now I need to find some other cloud service that I can support a synology with a local app

Everyone should replicate somewhere just for fire/flood/tornado/theft risk. But good luck with the ocean swallowing this wretched earth.

I store my backups on backblaze b2. synology has a native client for it. it's even cheaper than glacier

i have a synology 2 bay thing, it works fine and it lets me use it as web downloads for factories in china that can't use google drive, dropbox, asana, wetransfer or literally anything you have ever heard of, or FTPs. and i can run plex on it.

lol just backup the 500 gigs or so of actual important to keep material (photos, documents, etc) and then a list of all of your legitimate music, tv, and movies so that you be sure to redownload them if something happens

all of you synology posters, how easy is it to upgrade the storage in one? I mean after it's already full of data
|
# ? Aug 24, 2017 19:53 |

pretty trivial and you can mix and match drive capacities with the custom raid thing they're doing https://www.synology.com/en-us/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/Storage/What_is_Synology_Hybrid_RAID_SHR

apparently synology isnt very good for multiple 1080p transcode streams with plex and i should be looking at qnap or wd (pr4100) which once is less poo poo ui/security-wise?

LUBE UP YOUR BUTT posted:apparently synology isnt very good for multiple 1080p transcode streams with plex and i should be looking at qnap or wd (pr4100) My friend picked up a WD PR4100 and it's okay if you only want to run Plex on it and nothing else. It runs an old version of Busybox so if you want to run anything else the best bet is to run Docker, but it's got a comically old implementation of that running as well. We set the drives up as JBOD because redundancy isn't needed but didn't want to have 1 drive failure hose 40 TB of content, and there's a bunch of weird throughput issues under heavy I/O load, but that could just be Docker fuckery. Plex does support hardware transcoding but I disabled it because like 22% of the time the output looks like complete trash.

based on years of cyberduck use im super curious. i used to use it to access and edit files because itd pull on double click, open in an editor, and push on save. it was great for all sorts of stuff so them going the next step to make it act local as a drive is wonderful transmit has transmit disk but 4 has less supported services. 5 is out now but not cross platform and pricier
