I like ideas that are confronting but “tax is love” exploded my head. It doesn’t compute at any level. I don’t feel love paying tax; only disgust.
If it were love, we wouldn’t need the 3000-page Income Tax Act. We would happily pay and pay.
If it were love, the government wouldn’t thump tax out of us till our pips squeak. It would appeal to our better nature.
If it were love, the government wouldn’t reverse the burden of proof – you owe what government says you owe unless you can prove otherwise.
Tax is not love.
Tax is theft – Parliament may make it legal but that doesn’t change the nature of the transaction. Tax is slavery – we are forced to work for the government under threat of violence. Tax is love? I can’t begin to understand that.
The robber doesn’t love his victim. And the victim doesn’t love the robber. Indeed, the robber is more honest than government: he doesn’t pretend he’s thieving for the victim’s good. He doesn’t stay on following the robbery proving a nuisance.
Tax busts otherwise successful businesses and investments. In its absence we would be rich beyond our dreams. Tax is the power to destroy.
Tax might be tolerable, though not justifiable, if it made society “better off” but it demonstrably does not. Tax serves to pay young single women to have babies and pays young men not to work. It sponsors family dysfunctionality.
Tax destroys choice and competition in health and education ensuring second-rate service at exorbitant cost. It’s the reason our children are poorly schooled and Nana can’t get her operation.
Tax funds an army of bureaucrats to hassle us and to cost us not just in its collection but in everything we do, whether it’s to give someone a job, start a business or build a house.
Tax collection is wasteful and violent. The spending of the proceeds is more damaging than its collection. We would be better off if the government just left the money in a giant government sock.
We don’t “pool” our resources through government. No. The government simply takes what is ours. It does so violently and viciously without care. It does so not to make the country better off but to get politicians elected. That’s the fraudulent promise of government.
It’s a new thing for an economist to declare “tax is love.” But what's as old as time is Jacinda Ardern and Bill English each promising to love us to death.

There was a burnt patch of grass, about a metre in diameter, on lawn outside Parliament House.

A witness who did not want to be named said she arrived outside Parliament's front entrance just as the man was being moved into the ambulance.

Another man, who saw the incident, said he initially thought the smoke was coming from within Parliament. Then emergency services doused him in water.

He did not know what the man was protesting.

The man's placard remains on the steps leading up to Parliament House.

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesman said the man was in a "status one" condition, which was critical.

He would be transferred to Wellington Hospital soon, he said.

The main entrance to Parliament was being closed off to the public.

the income tax thing is pure ratfucking - the current government passed tax cuts into law a little while ago, they're due to come into effect next year or something. national is claiming that labour's proposed reversal of tax cuts is actually an income tax rise. dreadful stuff.
