That one Morning Musume girl had her career more or less destroyed since she got caught smoking and going out on dates.

I remember some years ago one of the AKB48 girls got caught having a boyfriend (gasp! the nerve of her!) and the producers basically forced her to shave her hair and make a tearful apology for her transgressions live on TV.

What I'm getting at is, while I like Japanese media (with some significant exceptions), their values as a society overall are all sorts of hosed up.

the hosed up parts of other societies often seem worse than the hosed up parts of your own, but rest assured your society completely blows in some ways too

Japan didn't criminalize possession of child pornography until 2014. You can still find 'jk' cafes in major public areas where grown men pay to hang out with underage girls. Sad to say, but culturally they don't really give a gently caress.

Of course, the same translated article that mentions the 'leftover' stuff also points out that fifteen police officers were arrested last year under similar crimes and only five actually had been fired. So... Japan.

When a country doesn't have laws against child pornography until loving 2014, that speaks to the values of the culture. You can't just make the argument that it is 'some section' of society, because even though the actual consumers of the media are pretty low, the fact that it takes decades to address the problem in the same society that also censors porn speaks volumes.

The fact that the author here is back to work despite being publicly arrested for having a Smaug-esque horde of child abuse photos and videos, that his 'punushment' was the price of a 2006 Nissan armada is a japan problem.

Waving it off as a small subsection of perverts ignores the fact that as recently as 2013 you could walk to an open air market in a major Japanese city and buy images of child abuse, and that the only thing that has changed in a lot of these places is a flimsy veneer about how the girls are totally 18. At best you can argue apathy on behalf of Japan with regards to this issue, which is still really, really bad.

You have to be specific because, while I love me some Murakami goodness, the NY Times Bingo from a few years ago, while probably intented as a light-hearted fib, wasn't all that far off the mark when it comes to Murakami liking his recurring themes.

The law established in 2014 was specifically about possession. Production and distribution were banned in 1999. You could not walk into a store in 2013 and buy child porn.

I think that was just wishful thinking that the guy wouldn't actually just be set back $4000.

edit: what I'm confused about is that what was the point of taking volumes off from sale if you were just going to...put them back?

Might be one of the reason why free online magazines are on the rise.
The mangaka are barely getting money from the magazine prints and the ads inside mainly offset the print cost.
Shonen Jump regularly has ads for cheap training equipment. Wanna get buff like Goku?
