I just watched both episodes last night, drat that's really good so far. 2 and a half hours of David Simon paced TV actually felt really quick. While I'm not generally a fan of Franco, and probably not much of one here, but that scene with him and his wife [the girl dating Paul Dano] on the bench was really well done from both of them. I hope this quality keeps up, this could easily be one of best shows of the year.

I really like this show. Darlene in the bar was the highlight for me and Chris' character is so upbeat, aside from the racist stare down he gets for actually being interested in solving a crime.

I noticed a couple more connections to the Wire in episode 2... -Slim Charles working at the dinner. -When the two Francos meet Chris Bauer (Sobotka) there are two lines similar to ones said in the wire. They talk about owning lawn furniture as being a sign of being domestic, Prez and Bunk both do this. -Also one of the Francos says "Did you just use 'venal' in a sentence?" Herc says the same thing about 'Habitat' in one of the Hamsterdam episodes. -In the final scene, Method Man (Cheese) compares locking up streetwalkers to "sweeping leaves on a windy day." The deacon says the same thing to Bunny about drugs. Maybe I should post this is the Wire thread, but it seems fair to talk about Simon repeating things from earlier work.

Cici and Lori snorting coke and slowly getting higher was good, as was Cici's bullshit sell that he probably gives every new girl. You ever been to Paris?

The actor who plays CC is so drat good. Apparently I've seen him in stuff before but I never really noticed him. I think he and Darlene are the standouts, which is impressive in a cast like this. I'm also really happy that Lawrence Gilliard Jr and Chris Coy are working with David Simon again. They're both great and they left me wanting more in The Wire and Treme, respectively.

Really dug the second episode, Cici's line of bullshit is really fascinating in the way he throws out all this lovely talk and then just off-handed mentions how incredibly lovely life would be without him, while also whining about how lonely it is to be a pimp. What really got to me was when he shanks the wannabe rapist and then calmly tells Lori,"You gotta get back on the bike" and sends her out to get another john. Candy's interest/fascination in filmmaking was both touching and depressing, though I have to admit to getting a good laugh out of the turkey baster scene. Do I understand the scam Vincent and Bobby are pulling correctly? The mob fronts them the cash to pay the workers on Fridays instead of Bobby giving them their paychecks. Then they take the paychecks (which without taxes is a fair bit more than the cash already given out) to the mob who cash them in on Monday? They frame it saving them the trip to cash it since the banks close for the weekend, for a small fee of course.

No way is Vincent not getting screwed by Rudy. Also, anyone think that the QUO on the liquor sign was lit while most of it was dim to say "this is how things are now" (the status quo) or am I reading too much into it? Cloks fucked around with this message at 15:00 on Sep 19, 2017 |

I do like that they gave Vince a head wound in the first episode to kinda help us out. Once Frankie gets a little more developed though I think James Franco does a really solid job of subtly differentiating the two.

Just wanna join in on saying that I too love The Deuce/The Wire/All-things-David-Simon. I have really high hopes for this series and so far it's delivering like crazy, I didn't realise how much I missed Simon's penchant for characterisation and dialogue.

I just watched both available eps and never noticed how much of a David Simon-sized hole there was in my heart until now. I'm super onboard for this, even if it's only a couple of seasons long at best.I also got the biggest grin on my face when I heard the first notes of the opening sequence because Don't Worry (If There's a Hell Below, We're All Gonna Go) is my favorite Curtis Mayfield song.

Cloks posted:Did anyone else notice the marquee for The Last Tango in Paris? I was listening to The Rialto Report podcast (the hosts served as advisors on the show) and they interviewed one of the writers who said that the thing she found interesting was that at the time there was the belief that there would be an intersection of the mainstream and pornography because of movies like LAST TANGO IN PARIS. It's touched on again in the second episode where, because it's a 'documentary' one movie was given a pass based on artistic value. It's a neat signal of where things are going to go, even if the characters don't know it yet.
