1970s New York is a disgusting mess.
60s-80s NYC is like my favorite loving era of aesthetic in movies, rivaled only by pre-handover Hong Kong action movies and maybe 80s LA (think Repo-Man, Terminator). Stuff like The French Connection, Midnight Cowboy, Taxi Driver, etc aren't just great movies on their own they're elevated by the environment. They've done a good job on this show of emulating it, that's for sure. Like you could catch some airborne STD just from walking down the street. Can't wait to see more of it.

C.C. vacillating from being needy and insecure to the hyper-masculine alpha dog to soft spoken and charming and convincingly fronting like he genuinely cares about the women he's manipulating and exploiting is super creepy and disturbing to me for some reason. Especially because the show opens with a scene of him displaying his presumably natural state of having a sort of flattened demeanor when he's listening to a fellow pimp pontificate about politis. Its a great performance from Gary Carr, as is Dominique Fishback's as Darlene. It's good to see Chris from the Wire return too. James Franco definitely feels out of place as just James Franco, who I guess has to be in every movie about sex and porn industries these days and is needlessly dual cast. Like other people have said I typically feel like Maggie Gyllennhaal tends to overact but she's on point in this. David Simon is definitely back, even if this is an order of magnitude more pulpy and lurid than the Wire ever stooped to.
He's my least favorite character. I mean, he's doing a great job. But I do not like the guy.

The compensation of prostitutes with a pimp tends to be things like food, shelter (such as it is) and "gifts" like clothes or jewelry or whatever. Keeps them completely dependent plus feeds into the hosed up relationship where they are led to see the pimp as their benefactor. It's a comprehensively exploitative relationship.
Like all David Simon pieces, the antagonist is always capitalism!

My advice: just avoid the thread for a while
That was my favorite part of the episode up until the the cold blooded shooting. drat, Leon really wanted to do something special and make that hopple popple for her. The Wire reference was just icing.
I also enjoyed the Bobby subplot about falling for a hooker who was more than willing to play him.
Nah I really just wanted someone to tell me what happened I don't give a poo poo about spoilers lol.
