Oh man am I excited to play more bloodbowl!

Bloodbowl is a board game by Games Workshop based in the warhammer universe. It's a really fun game but since Games Workshop is a horrible company it's pretty difficult to actually play in real life, between prohibitively expensive models and lots of persnickety things to keep track of I've never played it that way. Though some people take it very seriously.

Instead what I play is Bloodbowl in its various video game forms, both the online free java-based game over on fumbbl and the semi competent games from the developer Cyanide. I've actually already done a Bloodbowl 1 LP that you can find a playlist of over on my youtube channel.

Bloodbowl 2 isn't an updated ruleset of bloodbowl as much as a prettier newer engine with a more complete list of teams (barely and only now 2 years after release) and a theoretically more stable game.

However this is the Legendary Edition which just means its an official expansion pack that adds more teams (all the non-stunty teams finally) for one low-low price. It's actually pretty reasonable and a great time to get in if you've never played before.

Here is a short tutorial video to fill people in: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtzutB51qP0

It's not comprehensive but it's enough to give you an idea whats going on if you haven't played the game before. You can totally skip it however, you'll catch on fast enough with the regular videos, I'm sure.

We're going to be playing lizardmen. They're distinct in playstyle from the previous LPs of bloodbowl and I've played them a fair bit. They also will work just fine with THREAD VOTING, which has traditionally been the way that the Something Awful forum is allowed to ruin a perfectly good Bloodbowl Let's Play. I'm going to somewhat limit voting just a bit in this thread but only in so far as I need to get block on my saurus, it's just required. It's boring I know, but the first normal skill up on all the saurus will be block but the thread will get to vote for everything besides that.

Right now I'm playing pubbies inside a cyanide run league but in a perfect world I'd be playing goons instead. There is an old dead IRC that I used to use but it's DEEEEEAAAD and also it's IRC so we're going to upgrade for this thread to discord like responsible adults.

DISCORD CHANNEL: https://discord.gg/CrYDjqd

To challenge the LP team:

If you have once dreamed of killing my skinks then I have good news. I put together a shtity google doc in about 10 minutes so people can sign up for weeks to challenge me.

it's first come first serve and if you don't want to get on discord (which I would prefer you do) then you better have PMs on SA so I can contact you before it's gametime.

Here's the link

The thread is going to update on Fridays, poll votes over the weekend, and close the votes on Mondays. Sometimes there might be weeks when there is no voting required and I can put out an extra update but we'll play that by ear. The videos are going to be about an hour long and I don't want to put up too many in a row and overwhelm people.

Game 1

Our first game is vs. a human team and we play saurus ball to get some spp on our more important players.

Game results and voting:

No votable level ups this time, we just grabbed our first instance of block though so the next level that saurus gets will be open for polling. There will also be voting if the first level up a saurus gets happens to be special, doubles or stats, but for now the only thing we need is a name for our new saurus.

Vote for a name or submit your own if you'd like and don't forget to join the discord if you want to play a game vs the LP team.

Got 11 dudes in the discord already and I think most of them will do a challenge or two. A handful more and I'll feel comfortable dropping out of pub league and playing some fun goon games which would be WAY better for the LP.

Trying to pick something that hasn't been seen before. We've seen bash heavy teams and pure elf skaven bullshit. GnuOrder's necromantic is kinda of hybrid bash/elf since werewolves are so fast, but I though another team that skirts the line between elf and bash would be fun.

Unlike humans which exist in a world where they're neither bashy nor elfy, Lizardmen try and go full on both, making some players pure bash and some pure elf (or at least pure speed and dodging if not ball handling).

I enjoy playing lizards so the LP will be fun for me, and lizards are pretty effective even if you just give the players block. So we can have votes on skills without me worrying that the team is going to actually break i fyou don't build it right.

Some teams are more prone to having a 'one true build' than others, and while your standard lizard teams only come in one variety a lizard team where every player took block+random skills would still be a good team.

So, variety, enjoyment, and the ability to survive democracy!

Agent355
Jul 26, 2011

Nope.

You can have better agility, which makes touching the ball easier, or skills that do things like give free rerolls on pickups, but there is no way to get a +1 bonus to agility in the same way you can get +1 to strength with assists on punching.

So the way you deal with that is move your players in such a way that should you succeed and pick up the ball you have somewhere to go, but if you fail and turnover you aren't totally screwed. Sometimes you don't have the ability (or players left alive) to do that though.

Actually, I think that's rule number 2. The actual Rule Number 1 is Stand Your Dudes Up First. That way when you inevitably gently caress up a block at least all your mans are not taking a loving nap on the field for the entirety of the other guys turn.

How... how much is this game?

$10 bux for base? Which includes the chaos team I would probably play? And my computer could probably run it?

Well poo poo.

poo poo.

Dorkasaurusrekt for the new lizard.

10 bux for the base game if you don't want the extra teams ever, or 40 bux if you want to buy legendary edition and have everything available. I have no idea how intensive it is but the base game is 3 years old so not-very I'd guess.

The tutorial video is a video of my own creation just explaining how punches and touching the ball works. it doesn't go into strategy or anything more complex, but it will help people who have never touched bloodbowl figure out whats going on.

It was still very useful. I have one question that seems really silly, the dice faces, I get the arrow, just pushes, the Skull, you fall down, The explosion(?) you knock the other player down, explosion with skull, you BOTH fall down, what is the explosion with a exclamation point? Is that the one you knock them down with a chance to injure? Or is it just a higher chance of injury? Does explosion imply chance for injury?

This whole armor/injury thing is something that I am kind of mystified by.

Also, as someone who feels like they're likely to just play punch-man Orks, I now feel like it's an rear end in a top hat move to play in a league like that since it's mostly punch-man and injuries trying to slowly march the ball across the field. That an accurate idea of the Ork play?

Orks aren't as killy as you might think. They certainly aren't a pure murder team.

They're relatively boring and straight forward, but they're good for new players. If you play in the discord against goons with orcs you'll probably still find games at low TV but once the team gets some experience nobody will want to play against them as Bashy higher than 1400-1500 TV becomes really tough to deal with unless you also have a bashy team.

And what the other guy said about the two different pow icons. One is a '6' in that it always suceeds (no exclamation mark), the other is a '5' in that is almost always succeeds but the skill 'dodge' allows players to avoid it.

Sure, I'll make sure to do a quick team intro at the beginning of the next video.

On the subject of voting: don't worry, it'll come.

If i have 4-5 block saurus and the 6th guy levels getting block on him isn't as important and I'll probably take a vote, but quite simply lizards don't function as intended until you have a bunch of block saurus.

I can see what would happen, in my mind, should I have voting start from the get go.

70% of the thread would rightfully point out that saurus' need block and the other 30% would be voting for shadowing, repeat for the first 2-3 saurus until finally the block naysayers riot on saurus #4 and he gets strong arm or something. People get really wiggy about thread voting in a bloodbowl thread and I"m just nipping it in the bud by saying 'no voting until after block', it'll only be a few videos.

Agent355
Jul 26, 2011

Shadowing is great! and honestly it's not even terrible on saurus for the same reason that iretep said.

Sure you probably aren't going to successfully shadow (the odds with even movement is 40% or worse iirc) but even having the threat of it is good. Other options are certainly more impactful but it's not completely useless at all.

However there are better shadowing options on lizardmen teams: https://fumbbl.com/p/player?player_id=8936451 (this is why I have a skink named England, also i badly misremembered how many touchdowns he had but he's still a star in my heart)

Since it's Monday I'll go ahead and close the player name input because I'll be playing the match later today. I think the name with the most support that is also the best is Mothra, but further I like the 'godzilla kaiju as bad puns' so I'll go with Mothra-in-law.

I think lizards are pretty even vs everything without skills.

Later on you need block of course and some guard will help you against bashy teams (that stack guard to the point they overcome your innate 4str, so you just need a few to stay relevant), but you probably want to pick up a bit of anti-elf too. Tackle is a great option, diving tackle skinks, mighty blow saurus is anti-elf more than anti-bash. Shadowing fits right in as a 'weird thing that can be surprising to players and therefor valuable.

Well a 1db without block is 66% safe (33% is the odds of falling over), and the -3db was only part of that chain of events so you could include all the dodging and other things. But those odds are correct for a -3db with no skulls/bds.

Agent355
Jul 26, 2011

I think we can assume that anybody who is reading this far below the game update post has either watched it or is aware of the risk so I won't worry about spoiler tags.

The reason i didn't take the reroll is that I looked at the state of the board and figured that he would not be able to effectively threaten me next turn. If he was right on top of me I would have rerolled it for the reasons you give, but because he was far away and slow (and only 2 str) I felt I was pretty safe.

If they can't pressure me then I just get to make the pick up attempt on turn 8, which in a way is like a free reroll, and then if I fail on turn 8 I can just use the reroll on that turn.

I can, at most, make 3 attempts at picking up the ball. One on turn 7, one on turn 8, and one with the reroll. Whether you use the reroll on turn 7 or 8 is meaningless in terms of your liklihood to succeed, so the decision is more about the state of the game board. Generally speaking you use rerolls earlier if you are under heavy pressure and save them for later if you aren't.

In this particular case I don't think it was necessarily better for me to have saved it, just in case the 'flings got lucky, but neither is it particularly a mistake since I could just use it next turn as well. Because it was turn 7 playing the 'maybe I can use it better later' game was probably pointless at best and a mistake at worst, but if it was turn 6 instead waiting would've been obviously correct.

Oh also I should post this in the thread so people know. The easiest time for me to play games for the LP is Monday/Tuesday probably in the evening. (anytime from 3-4pm EST to 1-2am EST) and I'll be looking for games in that window.

For the first couple of weeks (probably) I won't need to schedule out games or anything because the TV is low enough to play mostly fresh teams and we have enough people floating around looking to play that somebody will be around. As the LP goes on I'll be scheduling games with particular goons and setting up times to make it easier for everybody, but for now if you'd like to play just hang out in the discord early in the week and I'll be around asking.

Don't be afraid to ask to play me as well, as I might just be sitting there working on something and planning to ask for a game later, but I could just play right then.

Game 3

Playing against Gaghskull's Chaos Pact team. Chaos pact is a team on fumbbl and I think it's a real bloodbowl team, but I'm not 100% sure on that. Gaghskull has used BB2's mixed team feature to create an approximation of it inside BB2 and his minotaur is the world's best big guy.

Spoilers for the end of the game:

I'll take a tie, I think I might've been able to win if X, Y, Z but overall I think the game was alot of fun. We do have a level 3 saurus to vote for, but that's kind of a blessing and a curse. I'd really rather have 4 level 2 saurus than 1 level 3, but so it goes. You guys are free to vote for whatever, I'm not going to restrict it in any way or really suggest any particular skills. I'll leave that to the thread. I will explain a bit about serious tryhard lizardman teambuilding just for the curious though, but this isn't me suggesting poo poo.

Normally with your 6 saurus you will have one or two of them be blitzers. You only have one blitz action a turn so having ALL of them be blitzers is kind of a waste, but you want your blitzer to have skills that make them really good at knocking down players, or possibly killing them. You'll use blitzers to try and take down ball carriers so you're going to want it to be as reliable as possible, generally.

You'll also make some of your saurus zone protectors, they might form parts of your cage or be used to add strength to parts of the map. Maybe they're particularly good at marking targets. Sometimes they might be killers as well but more generalized ones since they aren't expected to be blitzing. I think normally I have 2 blitzers and 4 zone protectors when I play lizards.

Krox and skink leveling theory we can talk about later, when it's relevant. Vote closes sunday night/monday morning. Make your opinions known.

Game 4 - Vampires

This is Gridlocked's vampire team. Vampires are an interesting team and generally considered to be one of the D-list barely viable teams except in the rare games where av7 is steel and they don't roll ones. I actually enjoy playing vamps quite a bit because I don't mind playing the shittier teams as they tend to have interesting strategies behind them.

Also I was sick while recording and Mozic wasn't going to be available for 10 days or something, so I had to get it done anyway. Excuse any dumb sniffling you hear.

Post-game spoilers:
Well rip dice then. I don't think I've ever had pick up dice that bad, the actual odds of failing that many pick ups is .30%. I don't know what the odds of breaking armor that often for just the one cas are but probably disappointing as well. I'm not upset with the game though, it was fun at least to have a dominating pitch presence even if, in a meta sense, the team is coming away with basically nothing.

I did roll a special roll on the skink though. Trigger warning: unfunhaver comments incoming.

+Ag is amazingly cool on skinks, it really is, and I would absolutely take it if the choice were completely up to me, but here is why I'm not entirely thrilled about the roll all the same.

1. Special skill rolls are extra tv, a normal roll is +20, doubles or +ma/av is +30, agility is +40, and strength is +50. So this one level is worth 2 as far as team value is concerned, thats alot and is dragging the team ever closer to the tv which block goes from 'nice to have' to 'absolutely mandatory' which is dangeorus when we still only have 2 leveled saurs.

2. Because it's so early in the team's development we're still going to be playing saurus ball, which means that +ag isn't really going to even come into play in a super meaningful way, the same way it would as if we were actually trying to pull some bullshit with the skinks. So it's kinda bloaty for not as much benefit as we might get.

3. +ag skinks immediately go on a kill list and everybody wants to make them loving dead loving now, and that isn't something we can adequately deal with right now. Short of just playing stupid boring conservative with that skink (in which case why even have it if we don't use it) we can't really protect it. So it's going to eat every blitz with block players until it dies.

I know +ag is goign to win the vote and I don't even disagree with it, but I figured the thought process behind 'why would we NOT pick +ag here' is more interesting than why we WOULD pick it.

As far as other skills possible and general team building theory:

Skinks tend to be ball handling and area denial and anything that makes them better at that is good. Skinks are generally all built the same and the stand out skinks are going to be the ones who happen to roll doubles or stats. Skinks aren't typically used to mark dudes because they're hurt too easily and having every last skink in the cas box is one of the lizardmen loss conditions. So they're used to screen, run the ball, and very rarely get extra assists to help saurus punch dudes. Anything that makes them better at this tends to be useful.

Game five - Skaven

Prozock plays a skaven team based on Discworld puns.

Post game spoilers -

I left this game feeling real salty about it, especially given how the end of half 2 and the start of half 1 went, but I think given skaven vs skill-less lizards is heavily favoring skaven I got about as much as I could hope for. Especially considering that the saurus mvp meant 2 of my sauruses leveled. If I could have exited this game with 4/6 block saurus I would've been feeling really good.

So all in all probably a reasonably average game that only feels bad to me still because I've had mostly bad games and I'm still waiting on a good one.

We rolled doubles so I'm gonna let you guys vote on a skill choice but also make it no secret that I would 100% ignore the doubles and choose block in this scenario. Players without block don't throw punches as often, if you don't throw punches you don't level off cas, if you don't level off cas it's a long wait for 16 spp when you can finally get block. But since people have expressed interest in having a wrassle saur, nows the time.
