My feeling is that they showed up at the office a week ago and this was the result. Rather than them reflecting on how bad last season was and saying, let's show up a month early and hammer out some good jokes and storylines and have a good season. So 12 weeks, 10 episodes of hoping they are inspired that week. At least South Park is back. Too bad it is no longer the best show on TV. Rick & Morty is now.

The answer is obvious: they didn't learn their lesson. Or only partly learned. They saw the disaster of last year and rather than taking the good ideas (a running storyline) and dropping the bad (trying to write an episode in 7 days with a coherent running plot) they have just gone back to what worked in the past. So what we got was a story that probably had another 10 minutes of material that Trey had to edit into 22 minutes and it ended up being a POS. So they learned noting and we are just back to where we have been for years. 1 week to make an episode that will be based on current events and sometimes will hit and sometimes won't. It's a pity because when they actually spend time writing things they can be quite good.

I saw Cartman Finds Love the other night. That was only a few years ago but man have things changed. We really need some non-topical episodes. Just kids shenanigans.

What I mean is you are paying them to take your data and add it to their database as they continue to research genetics/genomes/whatever. If it was like $25, it wouldn't be a big deal but it costs far more than that. So yeah, it's a scam. Also, it gives you no information that you really need to know. What? I have a distant relative who native american? Wow! That's so cool. And I'm also mostly white? You don't say. Cartman will find out he is part jew. That's my prediction.

There were a few funny bits, but this was a largely forgettable episode. Bottom 25% tier. I don't think they have had a top 25% since S19 and maybe S18. In other words, what they are doing is not really working any more. Topical poo poo every week gets tiring. It really feels like they are going through the motions and putting a minimal amount of effort in. Their ideas and takes don't feel fresh. They don't have a groove going any more. Switching to 10 eps in the fall was a bad idea. I'm pretty sure the spring/fall 7 eps then 6 eps to 10 in the fall is what did it. Having South Park on TV is great. What we are getting is not, though. South Park has been bad for over a year now.

I think I figured out what has been bothering me about this episode. They didn't really condemn Columbus. They inferred he was bad but it was pretty glossed over. Makes me wonder if they were lampooning Columbus because they thought people were making a big deal over nothing and didn't actually know what a POS he was. A Columbus expose episode, a la mormons/scientologists could have been funny. Randy as Columbus landing in the Caribbean and gradually killing off the indigenous people could be worked into something funny and educational. But what we got were a few jokes and no real point. And there are a lot of people who still don't know the truth about Columbus. Oh well.

sweetmercifulcrap posted:The annoying thing is Matt and Trey don't take the extra week to refine the next episode or brainstorm or anything. They just... don't work, so they can churn out the next one entirely next week. It's confirmation bias. They make more poo poo doing the episodes this way than ever before. And there were more great episodes made in the past than after the switch to the one and done. Really, the main problem was going almost entirely topical.

Inescapable Duck posted:As I said; ongoing storylines and continuity are one thing, highly topical episodes are another. But both at once, based on ongoing real life events they have no control over, were a recipe for disaster. Yep. And if they wanted an ongoing storyline, they needed to write that over months rather than week to week.

That's 20/21. Everything before it is pretty high quality with hits and misses. Except season 16. That's a bad season, too with only a couple worthwhile episodes. The first half of that season (the spring run) is total trash. The second part is back to normal, but that's only 7 episodes of which a couple are good. Must sees: 13: fish sticks, pinewood derby, fatbeard, butters bottom bitch, W.T.F., The F Word 14: tale of scrotie mcboogerballs, medicinal fried chicken, 200, 201, insheeption, coon trilogy, creme fraiche 15: humancentipad, T.M.I., you're getting old, assburgers, broadway bro down 16: sarcastaball 17: informative murder porn, world war zimmerman, ginger cow, the hobbit (and sorta the 3 part game of thrones black friday thing. it would be better as two episodes but the butters stuff is great) 18: go fund yourself, gluten free ebola, grounded vindaloop, cock magic 19: the whole thing because it is a somewhat linked. Not every episode is great but the running storyline works fairly well 20: none at all. just ignore it because everything that did work in 19 failed in 20. 21: none

It seems all the decisions they make have been for the worse: 14 eps > 10. Nope. 2 mini seasons > 1. Nope. Making eps in a week. Nope. Constantly doing current events. Nope. They need to get back to spending time writing episodes and having the kids be kids. The 1 week to air thing leads to all current events.
