a hurricane with a stripper name wiping out Florida would be pretty awesome though. bonus if the panhandle got in on the action.

So, Hurricane Ophelia's heading towards Ireland. They have Jose's scent. It's a little off, but give the hurricanes time.

Ophelia's now a Cat 3. Bets on it still being a hurricane when it hits Ireland?

Rad, 60mph plus winds when it hits north Scotland. And the thing is going to all the bother of coming to the eastern side of the Atlantic without aiming directly for Jose. What trash. On the plus side, sounds like it's going to be a fair bit weaker than the storm commonly known as Hurricane Bawbag, the last strong storm to hit these parts forkboy84 has issued a correction as of 21:58 on Oct 14, 2017 |

Bizarrely Newfoundland's Avalon peninsula had cat 2 Hurricane force winds in March. Gusts up to 140 km/h (87 mph). Knocked power out for a few hours, wrecked many signs, knocked out a lot of traffic signals. Fortunately this is only slightly above what typical Newfoundland winter is like, so otherwise it wasn't a big problem

some communists from florida have been distributing supplies in puerto rico for the last week or so and everything they're reporting back is horrifying. it's post-apocalyptic down there. huge chunks of the country have been completely abandoned also the place they were staying was raided by law enforcement in the middle of the night after they posted a picture of themselves in front of some supplies with a raised fist. the various occupying forces there are terrified of the people rising up against them, but not enough to feed them

Do typhoons use the same strength scale as hurricanes, or do they just come in sizes like coffee
|
# ? Oct 20, 2017 21:36 |

Nebakenezzer posted:Do typhoons use the same strength scale as hurricanes, or do they just come in sizes like coffee They use a wind-based scale for strength like the Saffir-Simpson scale but it has different boundaries: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_scales#Western_Pacific Most of us in the Atlantic Basin / EPAC region just gauge them by Saffir-Simpson strength though. A confounding factor is that WPAC mean sea level pressure is different than the Atlantic Basin pressure, so the windspeed to pressure relationship is different. It's why satellite estimates of hurricane strength will yield lower pressure estimates in WPAC than in the Atlantic.
