I know it's sad to feel nostalgic for the garbage fire that is Penny Arcade but man seeing some of those old strips make me really miss PA circa 10 years ago.

People usually focus on the art but honestly the writing pretty much follows the same curve. After 2010 fewer and fewer strips even bother making an actual joke.

Is that true? I can't remember if Cliff and the witch knew each other before they met via Oscar. Either way, we've seen two witches total and one was a real piece of poo poo. The siren girl seemed really surprised that Oscar believed her. Maybe she's seen a witch or power doctor about it, but then again, it doesn't seem unreasonable that she hasn't. It would at least be worth asking her.

IIRC there was a brief hint that the White Face Bear has been keeping Cliff hidden from Eliza and others. She didn't need Oscar's introduction, though; she latched onto him the minute she saw him at the farmer's market.

It's a branding thing. They're afraid that if people think Patreon is for poors that established artists aren't going to take it seriously. A single successful creator can bring in as much money as 100 obscure webcomics and youtube channels, so they're willing to tell small timers to gently caress off if they think it will help grow their roster of big timers by a few percent.

It's really weird that John Allison built up Future Scout confronting her dad and have absolutely nothing come out of it. I guess Tim seemed like he had a clue what was going on, but like you mentioned the Time Cane would just erase that.

I guess maybe Future Tim and Shelley would try talking to Future Scout while she's in jail? Still, it just feels so anticlimactic.

Remember that he was originally going to end it all with this storyline and then changed his mind a couple weeks back :ssh: So no surprise that it's an anticlimax.

Do you mean Bad Machinery, the currently running comic hosted at scarygoround.com, or its predecessor comic, Scary Go Round?

If you haven't read Bad Machinery, I would recommend jumping in at the start of Bad Machinery; 99% of the time all of the previous related comics are irrelevant so you're not really missing out. Actual Scary Go Round is much older and jankier and while it's still entertaining it's a lot of investment for rather uneven payoff, and I would definitely not recommend starting there if you're new to John Allison's work--just read Bad Machinery and if you want more then you can pop in to Scary Go Round and say hi to the older version of Ryan.

It's also funny to me that this happens because the ability to be concise is one of the main strengths of comics. You can pack a lot of information into an image and imply a lot of information between panels, if you do it right a page of comics can be relative to several pages of a novel. Comics needs more devoted semioticians!

:agreed:

They change the setting pretty regularly (I think they really are on their fourth castle now), but any movement towards resolving the core storyline of "Girl Genius is the Chosen One, being chased around by everybody until she can take her throne, also her mom's the Devil or something and she's been possessed" was abandoned years ago and there aren't even like substantive B plots going on to make the various castles their own self-contained serial episodes or whatever. It's just endless faffing around in steampunk meltyface land.

I don't think this is really a fair criticism. GG's plot arc is reasonably well defined and in between the faffing about there's a decent amount of progress towards unraveling the core mysteries of the story. I feel like we could reasonably see the conclusion of the story within 3, maybe 4 more castles that Agatha has to escape from.
