Working on an EP of original material. I've had about 6-7 sketches of songs in the works for years and years, and never really had the time/means to develop them fully myself. A few of them I was able to develop with an old band, but I've since moved away, and haven't been able to find a comparable group where I am now. So I figured what the hell, I'd just do it all myself (except for drums). I'm primarily a bassist, but it's giving me a great excuse to relearn some instruments. For the drums I'm working with a guy I played with for about a decade. He lives across the country, but has access to a good studio... So I send him scratch tracks with a loop that's close to what I have in mind, and he'll send me back the finished drum track.

I like to think of it as groove-jazz, or just funk-fusion. I'm heavily influenced by The Meters, The New Mastersounds, Medeski Martin and Wood, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, etc.

This track is the most "done": https://soundcloud.com/fro_tone/hop-scotch-on-the-rocks-v3/s-kSEGl
Bass and guitar are still scratch-ish, so re-doing those is next on the list. Then I want to insert a brief solo for both the guitar and organ. Tried to work in some trumpet, but really couldn't come up with any phrasing that I liked.

These are a few of mine that I recorded with my old band, so I'm going to try and do a re-interpretation of each:

I recorded an EP with my old fusion band several years ago before I moved out to Denver. I've been talking to the guys lately and we all want to fire up the engines again and expand it into a full LP. Unfortunately our old drummer is a travel nurse now, and with COVID going on, there's just no way he could put any time into it. But thankfully another drummer I've been playing with for 20 years at this point is down and both he and I couldn't be more excited. Our old drummer was good, but this dude is fuckin phenomenal.

It'll be a bit interesting doing this entirely remotely (at least for my part). But everyone has good-to-great recording setups or access to a good studio.

I've got a few sketches to add in when we get to it, unfortunately only one fully sketched out and recorded though:
