Because both times the communists could have been in government the SPD said no. Also Die Linke kind of blows I guess??

Regardless of the validity of the truth there is a pervasive thought that refugees are dangerous with the van of peace attacks, Manchester, Paris ect in addition to the belief that the government is covering up violent and sexual crimes that is suggested by the limited crime statistics available. The same is observable in Sweden and France. Also die linke got investigated as a threat to German democracy lol

Am I reading this right to conclude that the right has just under 25% of the legislature's seats?

If so, can I immigrate to Germany from the US? Because that sounds amazing.

In the same way there are crime statistics that you can display in such a way to make black people seem like they are inherently violent the crime statistics in the countries that are taking the most middle east migrants can be used to make it seem like they are all rapists. Then you have things like Koln new years where the government looked like it was trying to cover up rape gangs and hey presto you induce the public to think open borders supporting politicians are trying to get your daughters raped.

Politics is about perception not reality.

At what stage did i say they were right? There seems to be an incredible need to not understand why people end up thinking the things they do. People don't just wake up one day and discover ' I'm a xenophobic blood and soil lunatic now' any more than they wake up and think ' guess it's time to assassinate a bank manager to stop the Nazis from taking over again'. Like any sort of radicalisation there is a path somebody follows to become who they are and it seems looking at how that happens and discussing it makes you a nazi. My path from disinterest started with the Leveson enquiry and how it related to hillsborough. But no, continue to reduce people to a single facet and push them away because you don't take the time to understand why they think the dumb and hurtful poo poo they do.

AfD members are, on average, better educated and richer than almost any other german party. these people are not poor, they hate muslims. which is also the reason AfD polling went from like 2 percent to 13 percent at the exact point in time germany started taking in large numbers of refugees, whereas the AfD had existed a long time prior to that as an anti-euro party. in other words, when their actual concern was economics, they were irrelevant. when they started to talk about muslims, they shot up in the polls. that's not an anti-austerity statement.

I agree with this.

Also and I am sure I am going to get some poo poo for this, but AfD is not all racists or other assholes; a large portion of its voting share is people who feel left behind, that the country the know and love is under threat; they see the bailouts to Greece to the tune of billions yet only got a 500 euro raise last year; they see violence committed by immigrants (and the rapes like in Cologne on New Year's Eve) and wonder if the moniker "racist" or "fascist" is something they're able to live with in exchange for promoting conservative "old German" values. They read the news about immigrants getting apartments for free while their grandparents languish in run down nursing homes. They see this (inflated) worldview where immigrants and other social groups are benefiting at their expense.

To call these people fascists misses the point. Not every Trump voter is a Mexican-hating, gun-toting Klansmen; a huge part of the populist appeals of both groups is that they are "left behind" by social change that favors foreigners, Muslims, homosexuals over people who get up and go to work for a living.

The greatest way to promote the AfD and Trumpian GOP is by calling them names and giving them the attention they want. Even if they are called fascists, some of the message will still resonate with the poor, downtrodden, and angry who feel like the benefits of globalization and the current world economy is passing them by, that the world is moving too fast around them and that they are being slammed with ideas that, as in the US, it's more important to put a man who looks like Ted Cruz wearing a dress in a girl's locker room than to promote economic and social policies that help the middle class and working Americans that make up the great majority of the country.

Sure, racism plays a part here, but there is a lot more nuance in the world than most people are willing to see or admit. AfD is not neo-Nazism under the guise of populism and to label them that is to write off a portion of the population that is a lot bigger than anyone realizes, who do not see themselves as fascists. They see themselves as the "losers" in a zero-sum game, where immigrants get welfare while their taxes go up, feckless Greeks get free money to continue to waste as the expense of the taxpayer, and that they way they have been living their life is under threat from a stifling social shift that they want no part of.

Anyway for more ~hot takes~, I'll be here all year.

Merkel is a ghoul who eats parties to prolong her shambling political unlife and now with the new coalition she will have three parties to cannibalize, one of which - the FDP - literally failed to get back into parliament after the last time they joined her government.

I don't know when it'll start, but we're all in agreement that if Germany starts it it'll not get another chance, right? Devolution into something resembling the HRE is the only way to end the cycle of world wars.

The weather is basically the same, just slightly more variation due to a more continental climate. It should basically come down to whether you prefer mountains, in which case you should live in Southern Germany, or beaches, in which case you should live in Denmark.

I love how after she'd been in power for years and had an opportunity to lock down a big humanitarian legacy across-the-table Justice Kennedy style dealie by finally voting to legalize same-sex marriage and then she went ahead and voted against it "on her convictions," so it was only finally legalized over her dissenting vote. It earned her nothing but she really wanted to make the point she absolutely believes that the gays shouldn't be able to marry, come hell or high water.

I figured this was after obligatory English, but apparently English is not obligatory in Germany. Hell, some schools have Latin as their first foreign language. Pretty clear evidence that Germany has not abandoned the idea of world supremacy, when they won't even admit that English is the lingua franca.

almost nobody knows either and they don't get taught in most schools, but both of them are reasonably close to german (especially dutch), so you can often get along with your own language + hands and feet

english is mandatory, latin or french are the typical choices for a second foreign language.
