There's definitely not enough going on in the first episode of the season, so it's good that they invented a super idol that could specifically only be used now

Chrissy was in on the vote, so I reckon Alan's paranoia might have caused Ben to say something like "look, vote out Katrina this time and we can stick together and oust half of the Power Couple next time"

Yeah, off of the top of my head I can't think of a "Survivor is just like [my job]!" person who has actually been good at the game. Being so self-absorbed that you think your career gives you a unique insight into this game is probably a bad sign for your ability to actually navigate the social dynamics

Good to see a genuine curveball, but I'm very annoyed by the past two episodes playing out as "Should we get rid of the weak misfit who might be a good ally, or the strong socially graceless dude?" while boring narration time-suck Ryan is sitting right there One day people will learn to vote out the nerdy young white dude early on

bbf2 posted:After four episodes it seems like Cole and Jessica have had the most screentime, exposure and storyline development in total out of everyone on this season....and that's kind of crazy considering they're two of the four people who haven't actually been to tribal council this season (along with Dr. Mike and Roarke). Could mean anything, but worth keeping an eye on. Other than Tom and Ian from s10 I can't think of another pair who has so clearly been the focus of the first four episodes without going to TC. They're definitely the most interesting pair in the game thus far, imo. I thought they were likable even when they were just pretty people crushing on one another, but seeing their dynamic evolve into "Cole is an idiot who tells everyone everything and Jessica becomes increasingly aware of how it jeopardizes her game" has been a pleasant surprise The raft scene where Cole acts dumbfounded about how Lauren found out about Jessica's advantage, then there's an extended silence, then he says "I told Ben..." is maybe my favorite of the season

I am cool with Mike having an idol, but maybe they shouldn't keep the idols in the same place on different beaches post-swap I would be losin it if Joe was able to idol hoard effectively because of that

Seems like one of Chrissy's tribemates should have been more forceful about making her step down, especially after the second time she messed up. She was asking if anyone else wanted to go! Not getting a good feeling about Roark's chances based on the post-challenge confessional

"No matter what, I'm going to be alienating someone close to me (so I better pick the scenario where the person I alienate stays in the game)" — Ryan, Social Game Genius Obviously Chrissy had to do whatever she could to stay alive, but the Girls Alliance lie should also be pretty blatant as soon as JP sees the other two girls voted for Chrissy

I thought it was a pretty scrappy play, too, and I've generally enjoyed her this season. Her getting all huffy about Roark would have been funny if it blew up in her face, and it was funny when it turned out her confidence was earned.

She didn't bail as hard as she suggested at Tribal Council, but after she messed up the second time, there was an extended period of Chrissy: "Does anyone else want to go?" Roark: "...do you want ME to go.........I'll go if you want me to....or do you want ALI to go..." Chrissy: "If anyone else wants to go they can..." and then nobody stepped up so Chrissy just went again. The rest of the tribe was weirdly waiting for Chrissy to say "I am not participating in this challenge anymore and I want this person to take my place," so I don't blame her for how she handled it. I said earlier I don't know how Chrissy's deflection toward Roark will hold up long-term, but if she felt like she was definitely going to go then she didn't really have many other options. Especially if Ryan wasn't willing to tell Ali "Hey, I have a person who will vote with us, so let's not vote her out." I didn't get the impression that Chrissy and JP were particularly close, so I could see her feeling enough heat to need to give him a reason to stick with her.

I might be the only anti-Ryan/pro-Chrissy person watching this show, but I was really excited by Alli offering Chrissy a lifeline out of her partnership with Ryan. Probably not worth holding out hope she might eventually flip on him at this point. Editors are getting better with their red herrings this season, IMO. Usually the overconfident J.P. confessional would be right after the IC and mark him for death, but instead it was after the RC and he ended up being misdirection

Ryan's main potential saving grace is that most contestants seem to assume every 20something nerdy white dude is a Survivor Expert and trusts their gameplay is sound if they make it to the end One day people will learn that is a more threatening type of post-merge player than a buff guy

I think, based on what we were shown, Ken played a game that could have won in a season where the cast was less focused on Building A Resume. It seems like he was edited more sympathetically than he might have been perceived on the island though so who knows

UltimoDragonQuest posted:Some level of collaboration or social gameplay would add a lot to individual Survivor challenges. They do the bare minimum with rope chops and "Take a seat right now for a plate of cookies." This is why I'm really disappointed they've started relying so heavily on post-merge team reward challenges, typically with the same rote setup as the pre-merge challenges. Coconut chops, "Which one of your tribemates is [some negative attribute]" challenges and reward companion decision-making -- gimme more poo poo that injects stupid interpersonal drama into the gameplay

Still think this is a solidly average to slightly above-average season, but it could hit a rough patch if it's gonna be a pagonging into a Ben/Lauren/Ryan/Chrissy/Devon endgame. I only really dislike Ryan, but it's definitely far from my favorite combination of players left in the game and a pretty obvious final grouping at this point Midnightghoul posted:Yeah the tribals are the least interesting part of this season, since barely anyone is playing the game, or playing very simplistically This is part of why I like this season - it's a nice change of pace after the past few seasons of hardcore overplaying. Even as the editors use more deliberate misdirection to hide the boot, it's easier to follow than a lot of recent gameplay xbilkis fucked around with this message at 03:02 on Nov 16, 2017 |

Seems like Mike filled him in on his intention to flip and thought, at the very least, it might buy Cole another 3 days if he flips too. The leftover healers were kinda divided into Mike/Cole + Desi/Joe duos

I think the Chrissy stuff crosses over from "playing the game" to "playing the game poorly" because she lied about stuff that she either didn't need to or couldn't competently lie about, and heightened the intensity of the lie anyway. She didn't really need to convince Ali that she was safe, and she couldn't reasonably expect people to believe she wasn't digging for the idol/hadn't seen the clue when Cole tackled her to start digging under the flag. Desi's reaction seems a little strong but I'm glad she feels that way because this quote is golden quote:SK: So there's no future friendship between you and Chrissy once this is all done?

Desi also says Chrissy is playing the best game thus far in that interview, so who even knows if that's a lost vote for Chrissy if she makes it to the end.

Bummed to lose Cole, but I'm starting to dig Devon's pure earnestness. I was tickled by the way he seemed sincerely shocked and bummed out by the Ryan idol revelation, only to immediately get super psyched about his new bro duo with Ben. Keep lookin on the bright side, my dude
