That part I know about with sleep apnea.

Speaking of sleeping, apparently people used to sleep twice in a night... you see references to 'first sleep' or 'second sleep' commonly in literature.

It seems this might be a thing that people used to do, sleep for 4-6hrs upon nightfall, wake up to stoke the fire, sleep again until sunrise.

Yeah.

I had always heard people needed a solid 7 1/2 straight, but when I worked 3rd shift years ago, I would sleep twice with 6-8 hrs between - once before work, once after, and I went to college between.

It worked out alright, though if I skipped the after work rest and tried to sleep 6hrs instead of ~4hrs after class, I was a lot more tired. I didn't find out about the 1st/2nd sleep thing until very recently.

I mean I wake up with the last memory being just before I fell asleep more than 99% of the time.

I'm very difficult to wake, so I use multiple alarms in different places. Apparently, if people try to wake me, I respond and hold conversations with them, but I don't remember any of it. Said conversations can be very strange, it seems.

The dreams I seem to remember are either very bizarre, or more disconcertingly, very short and mundane.

The reason that is disconcerting is that something very similar to the short mundane memory of a dream has occurred after said dream... and this has happened multiple times. It's hard to reconcile that with my understanding of the world from a STEM point of view.
