Like, it still would have been lovely, but they could have had Homer say something like "what can I say, I'm dumb as hell and don't know any better" - at least it would tie the (bad) response to an established character trait. But Homer and Bart are the most popular characters so I guess we gotta toss the two women onto the fire instead.
