This seems like as good a moment as any to go back to an earlier point of mine and say that comparing moderation of online communities to Big Brother is real fuckin stupid. All online communities require effective moderation or else they inevitably begin to turn to poo poo, it's not like this is something that's only just been discovered, it's played out time and time again. If a community doesn't take the bare minimum of effort to chuck out the truly awful people then what happens is a feedback loop where more and more awful people begin to congregate there and decent people decide they don't want to deal with it anymore and check out, opening it up for even more awful people to use it as a platform. It's not eagerly lining up to gag on the cock of totalitarian hypercapitalism to suggest that maybe it would be nice if Twitter was more proactive about doing things like banning white supremacists, harassment movements, and other associated sorts of people instead of deciding that it's vitally important that they get to have an unrestrained voice in the Marketplace of Ideas™. Obviously the people in charge don't care about that unless it begins to impact their bottom line so I certainly don't think that Jack Twitter is going to be talked around into being a champion for truth, justice, and not calling Gail Simone a oval office, but in the abstract the thing which seems to hurt chuds more than any amount of rhetorical jiu-jitsu is being cut off from funding, soapboxes, advertisers, demographic relevance, and so forth.
