I've been relistening to the show and finally got back to the pinnacle of D&D, when a character unknowingly restarted a doomsday plot, until a lawful good cleric decided to poo poo on a corpse to change their alignment at the last second.

Did they ever talk in tomb of annihilation Q&A or on twitter about Edan Lacey joining the podcast full time? Baston has all the trappings of a throwaway character for the time when Ben was away early season 2, but Edan has such a heart-grew-3-sizes presence. Yet he's still not quite a player character since he does NPCs as well. It's an interesting dynamic.

As much as Ben and Edan mocked his speaking style, Dave is still definitely the best narrating DM out of all the actual play podcasts I listen to

Dr. Dave Harmon, specialist in gastro/exposition, part of an incestuous caste of comedians, making a decent goof out of prompts like fuckdoctor and cake and cum, was a delight.

Whether the comedy show was the planned quest hook to get to the captain or it happened on the fly, Dave (and Ben) really are genius storytellers.

Ben and Edan and all the guests also let Dave come up with 10 times the NPCs of most podcasts without them all having a singular voice moving things forward.

And sometimes you get the Fae king and queen where they just get real horny, which a regular DM might not perform so vividly.

Season 3 end spoilers: Has Dave ever said why he took magic away from the party in Freeside? It was deservedly vindictive but also didn't have a real payoff.

Not only has Edan played D&D prior to Dragon Friends, but he also gets limited DM notes from Dave, and plays the monsters from time to time. I'd bet that Baston's build and playstyle are intentionally sub-optimal so the show doesn't accidentally become Baston & Pals.

This seems likely, since Dave and occasionally Ben tend to get frustrated any time the party weasels out of something and it becomes NPCs battling or conversing with each other. Baston's legs and feet are going to have serious arthritis from all the times he's botched kicking doors and levers that were never even locked.

Yeah I'm tempted to go back and re-listen to the older episodes now that I'm all caught up but boy oh boy that first season is hard to listen to sometimes; and I mean that in the most hyperliteral sense. They're still...not amazing at audio engineering but I'm glad they more or less have it figured out.

Depending on when you first listened to season 1, Benny has gone back and remastered them to be mostly in line with later seasons. I don't know how bad they were originally, but aside from the missing 15 minutes of one episode, they're all fine with headphones and a finger on the volume.

And tsob, there will be a sort of continuity break during season 3, you'll know when you get there, where they started an offshoot campaign on youtube called Tomb of Annihilation. It hasn't been released on the podcast feed, and everyone gains some experience and some spells and some new lewd terms, but it's not integral to the main plot.

Very excited for the return of Bassbass, with easily the most fleshed out backstory of any character on a show that's been running for 3 years.

Even more excited for the return of Ostin Powerful, filthy gobbo junker covered in eyepatches turned accidental planeswalker.

Demi has also been doing some important work on what I guess is a tv show recently.

I watched a clip of tom’s stand up and I had to turn it off, yeah. It struck me as very typical 20-something “I’m yelling and I’m random and I’m rude and I’m on a stage so you have to look at me!!!” and I think I’m just too old for that kind of comedy now.

It was only one clip so maybe the rest of his material isn’t like that, but it was the clip he had promoted at the top of his Facebook page so I dunno. But yeah I love them both, individually and as a pair, when they’re playing with others, and the glimpses into their actual personalities that you get makes them seem like perfectly likeable people, it’s just the stand up that doesn’t quite click with me.

I was pretty confused to discover one of Tom's comedy sets on youtube was just the Me-Meow song in its entirety. It makes sense as a tween pop star in cyberjapan, but that audience was super confused. Also, did I assume correctly that Tom was supposed to be the fiddle player but just walked out having never said a word?

Anyway, this was probably my favorite opener to a season yet. A timed threat, the hint of a looming Carcosa and Bobby being touched by its madness, Dave's full map of the castle, and the Draggos wasting time going to a wedding and trying over and over to smell that flower. And Dave would never admit it but he was loving Banknote.

Season 6 starts on the podcast feed tomorrow, so I thought I'd do a quick recap of where the party members are from their downtime stream (still available at https://www.twitch.tv/videos/538334025) in case they don't cover it in the live show and anyone doesn't have time to watch.

The gang sailed for a while, with Bobby abandoning the party first, returning to Barovia to try and master his werewolf abilities as a way to stop the dreams of the dark lady and dying in space. He spends more days as a wolf than a man, and attempts to contact the local beastmen tribe.

Philge gets off next at Calimport, after putting a note in Baston's eyehole while he's sleeping saying to meet her at the Dragonback Inn in 3 years. She returns to blacksmithing, specializing in novelty mailboxes adorned with animals. She also learns to read and write from a dog who was taught by a dolphin, so her diction is questionable.

Baston spends his time on the boat drunk and depressed, barely leaving his room. After Philge leaves, he departs at Chult, wandering into the jungle in an attempt to find where he trained as a monk. After several bad decisions by Edan, Baston suffers a life altering wound to his gooch, and may never be able to fly kick again without it tearing. Finally reaching the monastery, he finds sobriety and a sense of calm, and resolves to meet Philge.

Lionshield Banknote returns home and is put in charge of a division of the family alcohol business, burns down a rival vodka producer and develops his own, Grey Goose Untitled Goose Vodka. He returns to the manor one day to find it cleaned out and a note from his father saying "They're coming for the house. You'll be fine, you're a Banknote. Try and remember that."

And so those 3 years have passed since everyone split up, the party is in 4 corners of the world, and Bobby sits in the forest awaiting a meeting with the beast tribe, but a lone figure approaches him.
