I'm gonna go through this frame by frame because it's so well done. The animation studio is Orange, who have worked on a ton of projects before, but I think this is their first time spearheading a series? They're knocking it out of the park. I'm so glad to see CG anime actually working. Interesting philosophical turn with what the moon people are in episode 4. And drat, that ending.

An interview with the director. Lots of good stuff here: https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2017/10/31/land-of-the-lustrous-director-takahiko-kyougoku-interview/ "I struggled for quite a bit at the beginning. I’m used to working with characters in their teens, who have obvious desires and acting on simple motives. As for Phos, they’ve spent 300 years not doing anything, so even their frustration lacks resolve and has an air of resignation to it, or so I was told by Ichikawa-san." "Orange’s crew has always been good at action, having worked on Rebuild of Evangelion and so on, so I knew they would be able to pull it off. My instructions didn’t amount to much. It was along the lines of, “Have the camera come in from the right and move to the other side, and cut it there.” Of course, that was written in the storyboard as well. And before I knew it, the camera would be spinning all over the place, as they’re known to do." "The very first storyboard is from June of last year, so it’s substantially more time-consuming than regular animation. The show is like a cicada that’s buried itself in the dirt for 18 months, to only now come peeking out (laughs). In return, I’m very happy with how it came out."

The_White_Crane posted:I feel like it's cheating just a little, because it all has this slightly oversaturated dream-like look which lets them get away with a bit more on the lighting than they could if they were aiming for a more realistic tone. The ending bit where Phos walks is the only part that annoys me because it looks a bit jerky. Like if you're gonna spend time on a walk cycle, spend it on the one in your opening.

I just want to take a moment to appreciate the music in the first part of this trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL3vytC1140 Those swelling strings. Auugh. I need the full OST in my life now. Are there any other songs with this kind of feel to tide me over?

CG World Japan has some videos about the making of the series. On this one, Cinnabar's eyes and mouth seems to skew as she turns around, making me think they're pushing the geometry depending on the camera angle to match a 2d character design: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6q3Zi22IXs Same with Phos' mouth as the model turns: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RK80BeJkfj8 There's some more making of videos and and early test on the same channel

I was thinking of that Noein shot while watching the action scene at the end of this latest episode. Scary buddhas is a very good villain.

Aw poo poo I thought they had just been shifting the eyes/mouth for front vs 2/3rd views. Nope, they actually do a lot more to the face geometry to fit the concept art. And I'm assuming a lot of this is automated with the face triggers attached to the camera. Genius!

Noein is fantastic and has a bunch of great work from "web generation" animators. But due to some production issue episode 2 is in a completely different style from the rest of the show. It's weird.

Why do the gems even go out patrolling when it's not winter? They're much safer if they stay by sensei in the complex. Instead they go running out around the fields where they can be picked off much easier by the lunarians.

Spinning and moving cameras is usually the downfall of CG anime series but drat it if this show just shows how well it can be done in the hands of a talented staff.

Well there are other 3d shows that took that "unlimited camera movement in 3d space" thing a little too literally, and only managed to make it work once or twice. Houseki no Kuni has staff with expertise to be able to pull it off, but that's still a rarity in the anime industry.

Such a fantastic show. The bits where Phos was having a realization and the split crystal with gold seeping out covered the screen was striking.

I'm home for the holidays and get to rewatch this show on a real TV with a nice sound system. Also gonna force my family to watch this show.

I showed Houseki to my family and they thought it was pretty but are very confused as to why the Gem's shorts are so short. Now they are arguing about the gender politics of the master wearing a full robe and the shapely gems being scantily clad. Edit: My family has decided the gems must be female and it's stupid to refer to them otherwise because Dia and Cinnabar talk about "romance" in episode 3 so they must understand how that stuff works, which wouldn't happen if they were truly genderless. First part of the OST is out. Finally! Has a lot of the great tracks, though not the track where gold Phos is chasing the Lunarians. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcLFp8uT1AU

Hahh, what a perfect ending. I don't think it was a real cliff-hanger, they just wanted parallelism with how the series began and ended. I'll re-check with the manga to see if that scene even happened. The manga is great btw though scanlations are spotty. I really hope we get a second season of this series in a couple years.
|
# ¿ Dec 23, 2017 21:52 |

Yeah I just checked, the manga doesn't have that scene. If they do a second season they'll probably hook this up with the part where Sensei, Phos, and Quartz go out on patrol and Quartz almost gets taken by the Lunarians.

It was a little unfocused but that was also a side effect of wrapping things up with Cinnabar and Phos and also showing daily life going on. It's not the perfect place to stop but it works pretty well and the last two minutes were just great.

According to twitter Studio Orange won the Grand Prize at the Japanese CG-WORLD awards this year for Houseki. Also twitter's automatic translation translates Phos as "Fosfosfi Lite". Like a kind of beer brand.

I posted a lot about Houseki no Kuni on facebook when it was airing and I got contacting today by a distant acquaintance saying he saw those posts and watched the show and it changed his life. Not sure how exactly, as he didn't elaborate, but considering i haven't seen this guy for 10 years it must've been revelatory.
