Really like the look of those metals! nice job

Thanks! Was a bit of an experiment as I wanted them to contrast with the browns and still keep quite dark. So it's S75 Black Metal, then stippled highlights of S75 Heavy Metal, then washed/glazed with a mix of AP Blue and Strong tones, followed by final highlights of Heavy Metal. Could have added a bit of white to push the contrast, but left these so long I was getting slightly burnt out.

Anyone have any tips for starting a decent scene in the local area?

I've been playing Nightvault with my old buddies for a while but we can only get together once a month for a big 4 player game. I thought it would be more popular thanks to the comparatively low starter cost and speed of play tried my local club but it seems no-one plays. I ended up giving one guy a demo game and he seemed to enjoy it. Guess I just keep demoing the game to as many people as possible and hope they get into it and introduce their friends to the game?

The way I did it was to start a local league out of the local game store. I managed to rope in 8 other players by printing a flyer and posting on facebook, then the store started sponsoring OP kits and giving league players a discount, so now we're hovering at ~18 league players out of a pool of about 45 players.
If your local store isn't as friendly as mine, you could make a small trophy of some kind. I make some that work as blocked terrain, and people love them.
You can generally get more people by allowing proxies too.

Cool, thanks, what S75 metals (or other colors) would you recommend? I'll definitely pick up those two and try them on my unpainted Reavers

Basecoat was the Wraithbone.

I ran the gamut of the flesh paints, though don't ask me which is which at this point, because I lost track. I found them all to be pretty good though. The guy on the left was done in Cygor Brown, though I had to cut it a LOT with medium. I still think it could have been cut more, since it's very, very dark.

Pants are Basilicanum Gray;
boots, hair and beard were Black Templar;
leather is Snakebite (which is probably my favorite Contrast so far;)
bone is Skeleton Horde;
tongues were Volupous Pink, iirc.
That's pretty much it, since there was a lot of flesh.

The scarring was done with the older red wash (I don't remember what the name is.)

I started the red with BA Red, but it goes on like a paint, so I just switched over to one of the regular red base paints. I'm going to have to play with BA Red and see if I can get it to work like a Contrast should.

I'm very pleased with the flesh and Snakebite Contrasts, and they will definitely be go-to's in the future.

Metals-wise, Black, Heavy and Speed metal are really good - dark steel/silver, mid-toned with a brown tint and lighter with a bluish tint. The gold set is pretty good too, only the copper/bronze is a bit more special-purpose. As for other colours, some of the of the blues, particuarly dark and abyssal blue - these have incredible coverage. Also the Fantasy and Games Innsmouth Blue, and Arbuckle's Brown - the former is a slightly greenish mid-blue, and the latter is a really warm dark brown, nearly magenta.

In a great example of "the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing", the Shadespire warbands have been removed from sale from the GW site before there's a Warhammer Community article explaining what's going on :golfclap:

Good stuff! It could be anything from a repackaging to "too loving bad".
Edit: There has been rumbling about them cycling out the neutral cards from Shadespire. They could be gearing up for that.

I think the cat's pretty much out of the bag with regards to cycling cards due to a Beastgrave hype posted on Warhammer Community.

It also looks like the Underworlds release cycle is now confirmed:

1 season core set
x warbands
1 board set
1 additional car set (Leaders pack, Power Unbound)

IDK, after years of playing games that turned into complicated, hard to get into messes because of cards never rotating I'm ok with new people who want to play the game not having to buy 3 seasons worth of warbands to be competitive.

Pulling them from sale or dropping support for the old cards?

Dropping the old cards was pretty much always going to happen, and is exactly what happens with other competing games.

I reckon they'll just rerelease the old models without the illegal neutrals.

It's going to suck if I have to get and resleeve all new cards to play the game with my Shadespire stuff though.

Pulling them from sale. I'm with you regarding the need to cycle things before they have to manage a fuckton of interactions, but doing so and pulling the minis from sale without any forewarning is not great.

The different departments at GW have a lot of communication issues. I have a feeling this was a decision by sales, rather than the Underworlds team, and would also explain why there's no Community article about it yet.

I'll be in Nottingham shortly and might swing by GW - will ask if I run into anybody relevant.

What with everybody calling this game Shadespire, or Nightvault, and not just Underworlds, as well as the difficulty I found getting info about it, I'd say GW's marketing team isn't doing their best work with this particular specialist game. I'm certain a demo or two would've cleared things up for me, but still, I don't know what's viable going forward, and there is little to no discussion of the Seasons or what that even means on their website. People talk about neutral cards and stuff maybe going away and there is no mention of that outside forums.

I mean, I'm still buying this game to trick my board game crew into Warhammering with me, but GW could've made this easier.

berzerkmonkey

I think part of the issue is that GW is putting out so. many. games. that it's just tough for both players and marketing to keep up. GW is really good lately regarding letting people know about good games, but they've always been bad at promoting and keeping games going.

Lord_Hambrose posted:

I agree. They were obviously shooting for a Magic: The Gathering vibe, but blew it by not naming the first season just "Warhammer Underworlds." They needed name recognition for the core set before they started throwing qualifiers out as well. The game could still have taken place in Shadespire without having it in the title.

Season 2: Nightvault
Season 3: Beastgrave

In terms of neutral cards, expect the non-faction cards for Season 1 (everything in the core box, Leaders' pack, Reavers, Stormcast, Orks, Skaven, Fiends, 'striders, Slayers, Skeletons) to not be legal shortly.

To be entirely honest, having my minis obsoleted do bother me a bit more than a bunch of cards, either in that game or a CCG. I'm not much of a tournament player, tho.

I done bought me a Nightvault core set on the eBays. Looking forward to it.

As far as things going obsolete, I will be playing this game 100% at my house and nowhere else, and absolutely do not give a gently caress what cycles out between sets other than what my friends and I decide should go. My only concern is mechanics changing between releases, making it impossible to play one warband against a newer one, but even then it's not that big of a deal to me.

berzerkmonkey
Jul 23, 2003
I don't think or mechanics would change. At most, it would be something like the addition of magic with Nightvault. It might also be something like random events like in Dreadfane, which would affect both warbands equally.

At any rate, whatever happens, I don't think they're going to completely deprecate any season 1 war bands. That would be a sure way to get people to stop playing the game.

The Deleter

I mean the constant cycle of new minis and cards is pretty exhausting. Cards is the big thing, actually, since they're the big balance point and every release has a swathe of new neutral cards that are mostly bad with some wildly good ones. If there were only faction-specific cards in a release then I'd be way less hesitant about continuing since I wouldn't have to devote the mental energy figuring out where to put the reams of cards I'll never touch.

I'm 99% sure the minis won't be Squatted, but if you're not much of a tournament player it won't matter anyway.

Eh, the good neutrals will be made obvious by community discussion in the FB groups.

Nice to have confirmation that S1 bands will still be around, I was panicked for a second they might be ditching them too for competitive play (I mean...it is GW...)

I just put together my Nightvault set. These ghosts are some spindly rear end mofos. Gonna let the plastic glue cure overnight to be safe. Looking forward to painting these spooky boys up with the least amount of effort possible. Going to prime white, hit the bones with tan, the metals with a few brass and silver shades, then wash em good.

Yeah, I snapped one lad completely when trying to assemble them. Had to get creative with the repair job there. Since then I've had to glue Varklav's candle arm a few times after I snapped it when I dropped it onto some carpet and it got tangled.

Really recommend shortening the pegs and/or widening the holes when assembling push-fit stuff.
