According to this page the only PS3 models that aren't100-240V are 220-240V, so you should be safe regardless of the model. Also there should be a label on the unit itself that indicates its power requirements.

That's only 45 W. The PS3 is going to pull way more power than that. My guess is you blew a fuse in the step-down transformer. Or if it's unfused, you might've burned through the transformer windings.

That's a ground ("earth") prong.

Isn't the power port on the fat PS3 a standard IEC (like computers, monitors)? Surely you have an extra IEC-to-local-power-plug cable lying around. Just use that.

I think the US is dumb for not using Celsius
Is that PS3 from the US? I assume the green wire is for grounding, but I've never seen something as modern as a PS3 have something like that. Also, that transformer can change the voltage, but it can't change the frequency. I don't know if the PS3 power supply would be able to handle 50hz or not. I wouldn't think it would damage it though.

Tired of waiting for Surugaya to have BC PS3 back in stock while their free shipping was a thing, I started checking up on places where I could buy one for a good price and preferably with its OG box.

And found this beauty:

Just look at it. Ancient box in bloody good condition, all inserts included, even the original ethernet cable is still packed in place.

It's a CECHB00 model and its glossy finish is in amazing shape too considering how these things get scratched by air friction alone. Two(!) Sixaxis controllers in pretty good condition for both their age and how lovely these things last.

It even came with some games:

Though the only surprise here (other than some bootleg Tetris game as the previous owner's single only PS2 title) is the fact there's a 2018 football game on a console that came out in 2006? drat!

Preparing to test it out I was very worried that I would gently caress this pretty thing right away and long story told short: I seem to have done just that.

I read somewhere that the very early PS3 models do not have a multi voltage power supply so I didn't want to even risk just plugging it in directly in my European 220V 50Hz current mains. No, I had a stepdown transformer from when I first got my Neo Geo AES years ago, this thing below and thought it would be safe:

Apparently not. Maybe it's not powerful enough?

I plugged its original power cable on the transformer and, let me tell you, it looks weird as hell. There's a tiny, strange green wire built into it, which I have no idea what it is. What the hell is this tiny wire?

Anyhow, the console turned on at first and I was ecstatic! Asked me for language, timezone, and if I could see the 1080p HDMI video mode. Just as I finished answering those questions, the system proceeded to shut down. I turned it on again and proceed to answer the same questions only to have the system shut down again on the exact same spot.

And then, it did not turn on anymore from here onward! I did not smell any burning components, the system was running pretty cold when it did turn on, but my suspicion is that I fried up something, hopefully just the power supply and none of the vital chips.

Please advise? I was planning to get at some point a different, compatible power supply from a later model that would run at lower temps, or maybe even build an external one with a modern PC power supply (saw a guide for this last week), but I'm not sure if this is the right way to proceed from here.

It's also pretty annoying I can't tell if I'm even pressing the power button properly since they aren't real buttons that would provide me actual "this got pressed" feedback.

All PS3 power supplies can handle 220V/50Hz. You're fine just plugging it in to your house circuit.

I'm 90% sure ExcessBLarg! has it right. You fried your transformer (or blew its fuse). PS3s pull something like 250W sustained, spiking to 380W which makes sense with what you described. It doesn't actually load anything until you finish set-up, so the system wasn't pulling the full load, but as soon as it started to, your transformer couldn't take it and either tripped itself or the PS3 auto shutdown due to an undercurrent error.

The very last PS2 game released was PES 2014 (which is the rest of the world name for winning eleven, which is a fun coincidence), at 13 years and 8 months after the launch of the PS2, and 7 years after the launch of the PS3.

That's not a bootleg, it's a game in the semi-legendary budget Superlite 2000 series. There's a few well known games and series' that got started under that label like Earth Defense Force. Basically a relatively barebones but still fully licensed Tetris game.

Anyway crack that thing open and get it repasted and cleaned out.

Also made a Suruga-ya order, basically grabbing a bunch of Japanese PS2 stuff. Sad I left it too late and now they don't have any copies of the good version of Auto Modellista but I'm getting my copy of Space Venus feat. Morning Musume so I'm happy.

What are the best options for PlayStation 1 video cables, going into a RetroTink 5x? SCART seems to be the highest quality but the Retro Access one is sold out and I don't know what other ones are good quality.

There's always the HD RetroVision Genesis 2 + PS1 adapter but that's $80+ just for a single hookup.

I'm pretty sure the green cable is a way to ground it if needed, that is fairly common with contemporary Japanese electronics. Outlets here don't always have grounding. Wild, I know.

also yeah there's a reason the Book-Off fukubukuro of doom always used to be like 10 copies of 100 yen Winning Eleven PS2 discs, those things are to Japan as old Madden copies are to the U.S.

16 bit? Back when we was kids we only got a single bit on Christmas, as a treat
And we had to share it!
I hadn't played much of Star Fox 64, so I'm playing it on Mister with a 8BitDo - SN30 pro - which resembles a SNES pad with twin analog sticks

SNES Star Fox maps "Tilt ship left and right" to L and R. Fine. I spent ten minutes wondering why the hell "tilt L" was mapped to Z, and had thought this was misconfigured or the SN30 pro was in Switch mode vs Xinput. Then I looked at how the N64 controller was laid out - oh right "Left hand the center part of the trident, index finger is "Z" thumb is the analog stick and L is completely used." Goddammit Nintendo.

In other news -
iOS has emulators now https://www.theverge.com/2024/4/19/24134871/delta-emulator-apple-tv-airplay (In before android folks: "Lol what decade is this?") - and since I have a bunch of roms on my OneDrive, I'm able to pull from that straight into the Delta emulator.
The last time I'd ever ran an emulator on a phone was in the late 2000's on iPhone 1 when jailbreaking and 3rd party app stores like Cydia were just starting (bit of a trip being able to SSH into a phone and kill apps, Iphone OS is not linux.)
Pressing buttons in the emulator is better than it was in iphone 1 because of the haptic vibrators being able to stop and start in an instant - not like an oldschool spinning weight + motor setup which has inertia.
I can see myself riding the bus, listening to podcasts and playing some NES/FC something or other.

Still... this is really only good for RPGs, better to use the SN30pro for anything over a few minutes. And we also run into the same issue of "you made progress in Dragon QuestWarrior 4 in 2013 on some PC emulator... where's the SRAM files?"

Warranty stickers are a necessary sacrifice when it comes to keeping these things alive, though I'm thankful both my PS3s had their warranty stickers come off cleanly (the 360 one was not so accomodating). Also shove a nice SATA SSD into it and consider custom firmwareing it, even if you're not going to load up the drive with games the SSD will make the XMB much nicer to use and CFW gives you a bunch of super useful tools for fan and temp control.

I'm using a Crucial MX500 for a very distinct reason. It was a SATA SSD I had lying around and wasn't using. Don't worry about it is my advice, if a WD Green is the cheapest option then go with that. Things like speed and such don't matter because you're saturating the interface anyway and any SSD is going to use less power than the HDD.

I found my USB to SATA cable in a box earlier, I should see what's on the HDDs I pulled out of my 2 PS3s.

So the FPGBC kit got an update to firmware 1.08, fixing a big problem I was having, namely that the Game Boy Printer didn't work.

The new firmware fixes that, but there's a catch - you have to physically remove resistor R45 from the circuit board.

The zip file with the firmware includes this diagram:

It's small as hell, so I put my phone on a tilting stand and used the zoomed-in video feed to operate:

I ended up just carefully using a small blade to pop it off the board, but maybe someone with a steadier hand and better eyesight could use a soldering iron without messing up anything else :v:

Since I was doing PS2 stuff I checked in on the MemCard Pro 2 and they've finally put out firmware 1.0 adding automatic cloud backup. It's only for Google Drive (they say right now but who knows) and only for 8mb card images but it'll automatically upload any new save data to GDrive which is pretty nice. They also added an option to automatically start in PS2 mode which is pretty nice if you were using it for PS1 stuff but still want it to load into your FMCB card automatically. The most useful thing though is the switch for slow SD card access to prevent slower SD cards from ending up with corrupted data, which has actually sped up functionality on mine with its bog standard Sandisk card. It's actually starting to get the point where I'd be comfortable relying on it, especially now my PS2 has a fresh clock battery in.

Just look at a general teardown until you see the battery tbh. Though the Saturn apparently has a door on the back specifically for grabbing the clock battery out of its holder. The DC's is right there when you pop the cover off but it's also soldered to the controller port daughter board so is much more annoying. There's an iFixit guide for replacing it with a soldered in holder for a normal 2032 though.

I mean, I like FPGAs, but the main thing I like about this hobby is tinkering and optimizing. But the last 2 systems I wanted to mod had really cool hardware mods that just aren't available anymore (wanted the rgb atari 2600 board too). The PS3's CMOS is at least right there on the motherboard but also I don't know why you'd ever bother replacing that instead of just having the clock set by the internet. I still need to find a compatible battery for the PS2 Slim since they used one of those horrible heatwrapped batteries for that because apparently a housing for it and its connector takes up less space than just a 2032 holder.
