as I understand it "request desktop site" just changes the useragent, but a lot of modern adaptive design doesn't check the useragent and just bases it on pixel dimensions

so I guess we're going to have to make the request desktop site button impose a fake viewport on the web context before making the request

which still wouldn't work if you got shunted into /mobile/index.html when it first realized you were a mobile client

that was what i was wondering, are we expecting a gecko based browser to also fake the viewport? is that something that's commonly done?

exactly, requesting desktop site just gives you the "desktop safari with a very narrow window" mode, you need to also switch to landscape and zoom out to meet the width requirement

ehh it's kind of expensive, it used to be $5.99, which was fine. honestly i didn't use any of the radio stations or many of the discovery options, i just used it to fill in the blanks in my library and also had some newer music from artists i like from there instead of downloaded, but that's about it — and now i don't listen to music nearly as often as i used to, these days it's basically only when i'm driving. so i could definitely just find that poo poo elsewhere

if you feel it's worth it for you, by all means use it

like that's fine, i just think it's funny that the implication is that it's a loving rip-off when i couldn't find an easy way to get an equivalent sub for much cheaper

i used to sub to the peloton digital app for workout stuff and i cancelled that and got apple one which is just shared between me and my spouse. between our separate icloud subscriptions and the fitness stuff it ended up being worth it; games then became a bonus, and i guess news but lol

i now have 3 subscriptions: this, youtube, and discovery+ (but i only have that because i used to subscribe to motortrend for $5 a month to throw car shows on in the background when i do poo poo around the house, and they moved all that stuff to discovery for the same price so idk)

this is becoming increasingly difficult as itunes becomes depreciated and finds novel ways to gently caress up on every new ios release

i too don't use streaming, i have a hard drive full of music, and i put some of it on my phone to listen to. this is now such an edge case that it's basically unsupported.

Yeah I have a bunch of mp3s on my PLEX server and Plexamp on my phone for a 'curated' experience, I binned my Spotify sub when they drove a dumptruck of money up to Joe Rogan's house.

I do miss the convenience and especially the algo-generated suggestion playlists on a Monday and Friday, they were really good at surfacing new music for me. Sticking to your convictions is tough, I guess.

Soulseek / Nicotine+ was a real godsend for my home music collection, it really does feel like a throwback to the early 00's using it.

other than increased icloud storage, news+ is the only apple service i still pay for despite the price hike. with adguard pro (or even just using the public adguard dns or nextdns) it doesn't have any ads, either. it's just pure articles and that's amazing in 2024

these days, sync will randomly take between one and three attempts to actually sync something after dragging the album over the phone icon, sometimes it will just do nothing at all until the phone is disconnected and reconnected one or more times. each time, the backup will run first, and then it might sync, or it might just stop.

it will repeatedly sync some of the same files every time it's connected, these files being from albums synced years ago.

it will randomly gain or lose artwork for albums.

if an album was synced more than a few months ago, it's a coin flip whether it will play at all on the phone, it's there in the music app, everything appears normal, but selecting a song simply has no result, nothing plays.

sometimes, instead of just not playing, the entire album will suddenly disappear from the album list.

this is just off the top of my head, using itunes for windows and an iphone 12 mini that is kept up to date.

this poo poo used to work. it used to work on this phone even. in the last three years it has gotten a lot worse.

that sucks. not that you should remotely have to do it but have you tried one of the third party apps that purports to do it? again, it's stupid that you'd have to but it might be nice if one of them worked
