An early playtest draft for D&D Next was supposed to bring back THAC0, but Monte Cook left his coffee mug on top of the pages and Mearls couldn't read through the stains. This is why the 5th Edition PHB still has numerous references to descending AC, but trails off seemingly inexplicably whenever it tries to get to the actual numbers.
