Left Communists are all the communists who split with the Leninists at the second Communist International congress in 1920, and it could mean a lot of things. It's basically everything to the "left" of Marxist-Leninism.

As a meme, Leftcom specifically means following after the theory of Italian communist Amadeo Bordiga, who thought participating in democracy was pointless since it would dilute the communist program by compromising with social democrats. Bordiga thought that what communists should do is maintain the program and propaganda until the tide of politics turned back their way from reaction. As a meme this translates to leftcoms reading theory in their armchairs, and waiting for capitalism to destroy itself instead of engaging in political activism.

Things Patreon is bad at: archiving posts

These are all the full episodes reposted for free by Radio War Nerd, not including the half-hour episode previews which are also for free. The episodes are divided into segments, usually showcasing a historical war, featuring an interview with experts on history or current events, or an overview of current war news. 1/3 to a half of these episodes will seem out of date, because current events in the world of wars have long passed them by. Going through the backlog, I'm noticing that not many of the actual war-centered episodes are reposted for free.

Episode 20: Tim Shorrock talks about the legacy of the Korean War, and the ways in which the United States agitates the conflict in a way that's counterproductive to anyone interested in reconciliation.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/radio-war-nerd-4395383

Episode 31: Interview with Russian investigative reporter Andrei Soldatov on the 2006 Lebanon War, and the development of Russia's deep state.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/radio-war-nerd-5435362

Episode 32: Mark & John go over the weird forgotten history of 1970s Left Wing Terrorism, and how all the white radicals got let off the hook while black radicals are often still in prison.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/radio-war-nerd-5524951

Episode 36: Interview with Kelly Vlahos of the American Conservative, on the way the MIC has brought a new gilded age to the suburbs around Washington DC. They also do an overview of the year 1979, which was the major turning point in late 20th century geopolitics.
https://www.patreon.com/posts/radio-war-nerd-6-5734184

Episode 38: Interview with Icelandic investigative journalist Gunnar Hrafn Jonsson about his experience posing as an Islamic radical to infiltrate ISIS message boards online. They also review the events surrounding the Orlando Massacre.

Episode 44: Interview with nuclear physicist Dr. Sunil Sanais on the history of nuclear proliferation and the near future of nuclear weapons development.

Episode 47: Interview with author David Forbes on the forgotten history of North Carolina's Civil War, during THE American Civil War between the Confederate government and Union loyalist rebels.

Episode 51: John & Mark do an overview of the 80s Cold War thriller novel The Spike, and the way it helped to agitate a general paranoia at the time about Soviet disinformatsiya, which was recently given new life by liberals.

Episode 63: Interview with historian William Hogeland about the true history of the Whiskey Rebellion, and why Alexander Hamilton was an rear end in a top hat.

:siren: Episode 64 :siren:: David Forbes returns to talk with John about the insidious history of fascism in science fiction literature, and an overview of the speculative classic The Iron Dream, a novel in which Hitler became a pulp scifi author in the United States instead of der Fuhrer, writing critically acclaimed action adventure stories about heroic ubermensch genociding mutant subhumans.

Episode 98: Interview with reporter Jason Wilson on the development of America's right wing reactionary subculture, and the Oregon Militia Standoff particularly.

is the issue here merely the presence of the market? imagine an economy comprising only individual proprietors who own their productive assets (looms, lathes, etc.), and are subject to a 100% estate tax; there is by definition no exploitation, because there is no expropriation of surplus value from any participant, but instead each consumes a level of use values determined by that participant, and correspondingly each may elect to produce more goods for exchange or fewer ones. would that still be a flawed model? just trying to flesh out the objection here.

I think in that case what you're describing is Distributism, and exploitation isn't eliminated because you can still exploit peoples' ignorance through pricing on your goods to extract profit.

The objection to viewing co-ops as a panacea is that because they're in a market they also have to compete with all other firms in order to extract profit and perpetuate their business. The Mondragon Corporation in Basque, for instance, is one of the most successful cooperatives in the world. Yet they guarantee profitability by using temporary contract labor which doesn't have a stake in the corporation. It's impossible to escape the necessity of exploitation under capitalism, and overcoming the problem will take a revolutionary change in economy. Co-operatives are a proof of concept that worker ownership and workplace democracy are viable alternatives to traditional top-down corporate models in capitalist firms, but if they still have to compete with capitalist firms then the issue of exploitation hasn't been resolved.

They ignored how the Star Wars Extended Universe was filled with a ton of stupid poo poo, and Disney had a reasonable cause to try and exercise quality control. It's all fiction, and the fiction still exists so what does Disney's canon matter?

The loose exercise of control that Lucasarts put on the Expanded Universe meant there was a lot of interesting stuff that could be done by authors, even if most of it is trash. Setting canon aside, Disney is shutting the door completely to anyone other than strictly vetted and approved authors from participating in the Star Wars universe.

Pener Kropoopkin

wizard on a water slide posted:

if the stories exist in the world and have value to you, why do you need the validation of a canon

Canon is important because it's something that a greater mythology can be built upon. If you declare something to be non-canon, then it can never be alluded to ever again, regardless of how much people like it. The issue isn't that Disney can somehow wipe out all those existing stories or the enjoyment of them, the issue is that they're smothering what used to be a living franchise. It's what the Struggle Session guys mean when they say that the Star Wars universe used to feel huge, but now feels tiny. A literal entire galaxy of possibilities have been cut out because the people who own the franchise - not its creators - think they're exercising quality control. Yet they're not even delivering quality storytelling. They're exploiting what they think people loved about Star Wars, and it's not going to last forever.

Plus in the original Luke had a decent life on Uncle Owen's moisture farm. It wasn't great, but he had a family that cared about him and he was living free. The Empire massacring his aunt and uncle are what pushes him into answering the call. Both of his motivations are relatable.

On the other hand, Rey lives as a scavenger exposed to the elements with no loved ones for as long as she can remember. She initially answers the call because she's being attacked by the First Order, but rejects it later for personal reasons that aren't explained at all by the movie because they're cynically concealing her backstory for sequel bait.
