The combat is ok. It's literally 90% the interface that keeps me from playing those games. It's a shame cause in theory they're right down my alley, but a lot of old game sare just unfucking playable to someone spoiled on modern interfaces. I can only play Morrowind with dozens of mods installed, for example

Pener Kropoopkin posted:It's weird that you're complaining about interfaces, when Morrowind had one of the best interfaces for a PC RPG ever made. I mean, MCP and the Overhaul Project is essential now, if only to get the draw distance to something respectable - but the actual in-game interface is solid for mouse + keyboard. You could drag all of the windows to any size you wanted, put them where you wanted, and even lock them so they stayed visible in real-time. I guess the real problem is that there's no item sorting for your inventory, and there's a ton of items to pick up. I'm sure it was great for the time but the whole systems a mess in tyool 2017

I can understand China being hard to immigrate to, given that they are the most populous country on the planet. If anyone can say "gently caress off we're full" it's them. This will probably have to change though, thanks to the one child policy loving with the gender ratio. Also, North America is pretty unique wrt immigration. I don't think one can assimilate into Western Europe. For example, I as a Hispanic American, could never be a Swede, my Sweden-born children probably wouldn't be either, the same can't be said of America, I'm proof of that, imo. This cultural assimilation came at the cost of possibly the most complete colonialism (read genocide) of a continent. So I don't think it's fair to hold other countries to North America's standard. Pener Kropoopkin posted:I maintain nonetheless that yin-yang dualism can be overcome. Pener Kropoopkin posted:All of the factions have a clear ideology, even the SMAX factions. The Hive is a blend of ancient Chinese Legalism and Maoism, that sees the temporary sacrifices of humanity as necessary for its eventual liberation even from base material existence. It's an absolute authoritarianism whose end goal is Eudaimonic, although Thought Control could end up being an equally valid choice. Yang also has a hard on for Nietzche, but he inverts his theory, for Yang the nihilstic Last Man is the ideal. Data angels are more edgy cyberpunk hackers, they were more inspired by the 90's optimistic view of the internet, rather than any actual anarchism. The drones are apparently syndicalists in presentation. Edit: it's important to understand that the base game factions were definitely taken from the geopolitical ideologies of the time. The expansion got a bit more imaginative with the ideologies, for better or worse. Dreddout has issued a correction as of 07:12 on Nov 11, 2017 |

Pener Kropoopkin posted:I wouldn't say it got more imaginative. Imaginative was the wrong word. I should have said "speculative". In general the SMAC factions were based on what was at the time the powerful geopolitical ideologies, more or less taken to extremes. Morgan and Miriam pull double duty for conservatism. Morgan being the finance corporate aspect. Miriam was specifically an American Evangelical, and boy howdy it shows Deidre is clearly an analogue to the Global Green movement, Zak is actually the most interesting and funny in hindsight. He was clearly a stand in for the then new Russian Federation, at a time when it's future was uncertain and could have gone in many ways, but was generally looking to be a neoliberal technocratic regime. Boy did that prediction not age well. Lal is just literally the UN. Santiago represents authoritarian juntas that dominated much of Latin America. Yang is the oddest. He's got this weird nihilistic, legalistic, collectivism mix going on. But ultimately he represents 90's China as a growing power. The SMAX factions clearly have a unifying thematic descision of being speculative. Rather than modern global forces taken to ideological extremes of SMAC; they were more fantastical imaginings of sci-fi societies. Transhumanism, Cyperpunk, Pirates, An eco cult led by an indigo child. They felt more like something you'd see in speculative sci-fi, rather than the geopolitical commentary of the SMAC factions. Ultimately, it was a good counterpoise to the base game from a writing perspective. Many of them also serve as narrative foils to the base factions. Sadly you are right that the expansion factions didn't get their due diligence of flavor text, and feel hollow in comparison to the base factions. But the germs of ideas behind the SMAX factions aren't any less interesting, it's a shame they didn't double the tech tree.
