Wow.. does your insurance plan not have a 'max annual out of pocket', or is it just stupidly high? I believe mine caps out somewhere around two grand, but my deductible is 800, so only another 1200'ish after paying my deductible I hit max out of pocket and everything goes to 100% covered. I guess I'm lucky in that I've never hit it, but it's nice to know it's there if something like what you are going through ever happens.

I've been on my company health care plan for coming up on 7 years now, and the premiums have gone up, along with the deductibles and out of pocket and co-pays every year. I guess I just feel like it's terrible because it's the only one I know and it keeps getting worse.

If mine is one of the best, then that is utterly depressing.

Edit: Know also that I'm single, and everything doubles for family plans except co-pays of course.

Dumb healthcare question.

The benefits package where I work is something that is held out as part of why good people should work for us. Competitive pay and good benefits is something that you simply must have if you want to attract and keep good talent. You can substitute higher pay for worse benefits, or sometimes better benefits for worse pay, but the combination has to be attractive at some level if you (as a company) want to keep solid talent on the payroll.

My company is heavily IT, and it's really difficult to keep good people in the long term, because the really good people can get huge raises by just jumping ship periodically.

Is the lovely healthcare I'm reading about in this thread because this just isn't true of most industries in the country? Is there no competition for good workers so no need to provide good benefits and/or pay? I guess it just seemed obvious to me that good employees would migrate to good companies that provided these benefits, and the other companies would need to step up and provide similar benefits/pay if they wanted to not constantly lose their talent. It sounds like this is completely not true, and I'm puzzled as to why, as it seems like the labor market would force the companies into providing decent benefits.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see affordable health-care for everyone in the country, whether that was through a single-payer system or something completely different. I was more just curious about how different industries manage to keep good employees with lovely benefits.

The example above where a nurse practitioner in a cancer center has a worse health care option than the government job is mind boggling to me. With the incredible demand for health care professionals I would expect the health plans available to the employees to be fantastic in order to attract the workers.

Market forces forcing employers to offer better benefits doesn't work for a simple reason - nobody else does.

Employers have the choice of keeping profits/distributing them to those at the top/shareholders or spending them on employee wages and benefits. Without a critical mass of employers doing so there's no impetus for anyone else to, so most jobs offer mediocre or borderline terrible benefits as a result.

But why is it true of the IT industry but not (for example) the healthcare industry? Am I just living a lie that this is a truth in the IT industry?

E: genuine question, I am interested. £59/year to cover me in any vehicle towed to nearest garage, £109 with recovery to any location of my choice.

Here in Arizona, AAA costs like $60/90/120 (I think) depending on how many tow-miles you want to have included (and some misc. other stuff that is better the more you pay).

I think the cheapest one is no free towing (or 5 miles or something), then 100/200 miles for the other two. There is no 'anywhere you want' towing option, the USA is a big place.

I remember playing a poo poo-ton of WoW but still somehow never reaching level 60 because I kept rerolling characters. I went to the midnight launch of Burning Crusade, came home and installed it, and literally never opened the game again.

Volkswagen knowledgable guys. Is there a known oil-leak problem with the mid 2000's era new Beetles?

One of my co-workers sort of adopted another daughter (her family is complete poo poo), and she drives one of these things, but it pukes major amounts of oil and she can't afford to have it looked at, so I'm guessing that I'll be doing this in the very near future.

Random music chat.

For many years my favorite 'genre' of music has been European female-fronted metal bands, preferably without any male vocals at all.

So a question I never even thought of was recently answered... What happens when you take 4 already successful female lead singers from different bands (with different styles) and put them together into a single group and have them record an album of covers of various pop artists (Depeche Mode, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys, etc.)??

The answer is "Exit Eden".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8nafVgHtZ8

The soaring soprano voice is the big blonde, Amanda Somerville. Her and the little latina Marina La Torraca have the best voices by far IMO, but somehow they make the others work well in the mix.

Not sure if anyone else here will like it, but I'm really digging it at the moment.

Also, "Napalm Records" is the best label. :v:

I'm probably behind on new bands too, but the bands I like seem to have a lot of longevity and all the new ones that I try seem to mix in way too much of the growling/male vocals (Amaranthe would be loving amazing if they would seal the guys mouths shut). Nightwish is what got me into the genre, and their current lead singer Floor Jansen is really good, but they went through a couple duds after losing Tarja.

Within Temptation, Epica, Delain, Domina Noctis, Nemesea, Sirenia and Xandria are some good ones in the style I like.

Both Within Temptation, and Epica have recorded albums from concerts where they appeared with entire symphony orchestra's and choirs backing them.

Absolutely. Also Epica, which is where Amanda Somerville comes from.

She was a fill in for Simone Simons for a tour, but she has never recorded with Epica, that is pure Simone.

Amanda seems to float around and do all kinds of different projects, but I discovered her on an album named City of Heroes which is a collaboration with Michael Kiske.

quote:

Yeah, I'm not interested in growling/croaking/gargling either. I can't understand any of it, and it just sounds like inarticulate grunts.

This pretty much defines which groups whose music I will buy or not. Epica is right on the edge for me, but Simone is good enough that I buy their music and just skip the horrible tracks.

quote:

Nope. Previously posted one was good, but the screaming guy needs to shut up and let someone with talent sing.

Probably why I don't have any of their music. With this genre I always try to listen to half a dozen songs and if half of them have growling they don't make the cut. Amaranthe is a perfect example of this. Absolutely phenomenal singer in Elize Ryd and even a good male lead, but they ruin it by having another guy growling in well over half of their tracks. Makes me sad because Elize Ryd is so drat good (also smoking hot).

If you like solid male vocals in this style, Kamelot is great, and is actually from the US, but I think their style is a lot closer to the European rock than anything here.

I never use my debit card anywhere, and so far (knock on wood) only my credit cards have had fraudulent activity on them, which was resolved quickly by the bank once discovered.

Also to Ferremit - talk to your bank manager and unless your bank is a bunch of shitters, you should be able to get any charges caused by this reversed.

Fair warning... I am pretty terrible at video games and I finished the main storyline in just over 25 hours of play time and nowhere near the biggest baddest ship in the game. I was in the Destroyer from the mercenaries guild (fully kitted with level 6 stuff) and assumed I had a bunch more to go in the story, and did what turned out to be the final mission without too much trouble.

I was expecting to need to be upgraded into a dreadnought, so just figured there was a lot more to go. If you get to a mission that takes you to Charon, be aware that there is only the final mission after that one.

The game doesn't end when you finish the final mission, you can continue playing and amassing wealth and bigger ships to your hearts content after that.

As someone who almost never completes games, I felt like the main storyline was just too short. For $5 though, it was very much worth it and I have no regrets and will probably be playing it some more, although with no real goals left (I have flown the largest ship in the game now) it probably doesn't have a lot of life left for me. I've actually downsized my ship since the top two dreadnoughts are just far too easy mode even for me!

Enjoy the game though, for $5 it's a pretty good entertainment value.
