Insurance chat: I'm on a $0 deductible/$500 out of pocket plan that runs ~$250/month, but it's an HMO that very few places accept (hence why it's so cheap... BCBS shot up to about $600/month for a similar plan this year). I have to drive a few cities away (and well into the next county) to see my doctor; the only one I've found nearby that takes my insurance insists on cash up front, then he'll mail a refund check whenever he gets paid by the insurance company (and admits "that might take a year or so").

It's going up to nearly $400/month next year. :argh: I do get a substantial subsidy (courtesy of the ACA) that knocks it down to ~$27/month right now, but my portion is going up to about $170/mo next year. Since I have pre-existing conditions that require bloodwork every 3 months, a doctor's visit every 1-3 months (depending how hosed up my bloodwork is), 5 meds a month, and a specialist visit at least once a year, I need to stay on a low deductible/low out of pocket/low copay plan unless I want to declare bankruptcy. Right now routine dr visits to my PCP are free, urgent care is $15, bloodwork is :10bux:, ER visits are $150 (hospital stays aren't covered though, unless I go to a handful of hospitals... the closest of which is half an hour away), and (preferred generic) medications are $5 a month. I'm lucky enough to have a doctor that's worked with this insurance company for quite awhile, and knows their formulary and restrictions well.

Serious reply, ask them about any charity programs they may have (assuming it was a hospital ER you went to, anyway). I got a ~$30k hospital visit forgiven like this when I was uninsured and working part time/going to school full time.

Most hospitals have some kind of charity assistance. It's a tax writeoff for them. You're still left with the actual doctor's bills, but often they agree to write off their portion if the hospital does. You usually have to specifically ask about a charity program or low income assistance (which you may not be able to get if you're making $2500/month, but it's worth a shot). They'll want bank statements and probably proof of your expenses; it took a few days to complete all the paperwork, and about a month for them to approve it.

So a friend of mine is a realtor... and also sells cars. :haw: She was my downstairs neighbor at my last apartment. To be honest though, I'd use her as a realtor in a heartbeat - she's been honest with me about commissions, who pays her, etc. Probably won't buy a car from her though, more because of the dealer she's affiliated with. I've helped her out on a couple of listings by going into vacant houses and doing random measurements (living room dimensions, fridge cut out dimensions, etc), so she owes me a little bit of a favor anyway.

Also people were tipping really loving good... I spent a few hours doing Uber Eats after I finished with Amazon. Total income just from Uber was $95, plus another $25 in cash tips. I haven't looked at what the in-app tips were yet. Normally I don't get tips on Uber Eats orders. I can't do Uber passenger service since coupe, 2+2 seating, and broken ac (but I hate dealing with people anyway), but passenger stuff pays a bit more per mile. I made ~$40-50 (won't know for ~36 hours) from Amazon on top of that.

Also, my own experience shows that most people in the UK, Canada, and Australia are far more knowledgeable about what's going on in the US than the average American (I'm lumping myself into this group too - most of my friends overseas are more knowledgeable about our politics than I am).

e: seems like a good time to mention I now have 4 jobs... Amazon, GrubHub, Uber, and Shiftgig. And none of them include such silly things like "vacation" or "medical insurance". At least Shiftgig is a W2 position - they withhold taxes for me, while the others are considered self employment. I'm going to be a magnet for an IRS audit with my 2017 taxes, with all of the writeoffs I'm claiming (I've driven almost 50k for work this year alone, which is good for a nearly $27,000 writeoff, and I write off tolls, my work phone, student loan interest, medical insurance premiums, fees for my mileage tracking software, fees for Quickbooks Self-Employed, etc).

Got hired there again today, in the position I originally started in. Part time, and I may have to give up my Amazon delivery contract (which isn't giving me poo poo for hours anymore anyway), but I enjoyed working there before, and they're flexible on scheduling (so I can keep doing GrubHub and Uber Eats, but I'll be averaging 29 hours a week at whole paycheck). Unfortunately no, but the store manager and my manager said given the circumstances, it wouldn't be a problem and that I'd still be eligible for rehire.

I followed up a few months later and my former manager said I was eligible for rehire still. I'd run into him a year or so later at the store when I was shopping and he'd said I was welcome to come back. The separation paperwork also showed I was eligible for rehire. So I don't know what changed on that front.

Anyway, I'm done talking about it. There was obviously no defending myself with them, and I've had other offers come up. It sucks, but gotta move on.

That moment when you plug your power-hungry phone into your car charger.. then smell something letting the magic smoke out. Then you notice both your work and personal phone have stopped charging (dual output charger, USB A and USB C outputs.. work phone is microUSB, personal phone USB C).

Looks like I get to warranty the USB C to USB C cable. If I plug it in (even without the phone plugged in), the charger dies and gets hot, and the far side plug on the cable gets pretty warm.

I thought Cable Matters was supposed to be one of the more trustworthy USB C cable makers... this is the second one I've had fail (both from the same order last summer). They warrantied the first one fine, wonder if they'll warranty this one too.. decent USB C to USB C cables are kinda spendy for a cable. :smith:

If you mean Benson, he used to recommend these cables. Looks like he doesn't anymore, but at the time he said they did comply with the standards. It may have been Nathan who was recommending them at the time (and the last version of his spreadsheet still recommends them for the Pixel), but either way, /r/Nexus6P strongly suggested these cables as being one of the best of the cheap cables. They also said the car charger I have was the best cheap one, aside from popping out of the power port easily (looks like it's also been pulled from Amazon.. go figure).

I'm guessing they just had crummy solder joints within the plugs that came apart. The cable in my car sees very heavy use (plugged/unplugged multiple times per day, up to 30 times a day even), the one at home gets used nightly (but the phone is usually on the bed next to me, so occasionally gets rolled over on, cat jumps on it, gets knocked off the bed, etc). Kinda surprised the home one failed before the one in the car.

I have some Anker USB A to USB C cables for when I want to plug it in to the PC (and it seems like he really doesn't like Anker's cables - usually Anker's stuff is pretty well regarded, but I've had very bad luck with their cables too), but I only use those when I need to move files between the PC and phone.

Amazon reviews for these cables nosedived before Cable Matters pulled them, I'm guessing they just didn't hold up to heavy use very well.

I'm using the OEM cable that came with the phone in the car for now, and Cable Matters sent a new cable for the failed cable I was using on my home charger. The OEM cable is only 3 ft (which is useless for home unless I'm charging it off of a countertop outlet), while the others are a bit over 6 ft (perfect for your typical outlet if you want to use the phone while charging, or if you live somewhere that isn't Groverhaus, i.e. I don't have outlets every 2-3 ft in every direction).

I'll probably go ahead and order the AmazonBasics cable Benson gave 5 stars on even if Cable Matters replaces this one - pretty surprised to see an AmazonBasics product praised, they're usually pretty cheaply made.

Wait. the fusible links were above the equipment, or inside the vent hoods? (the discharge nozzles are usually above the equipment, with the fusible links inside the hood) But yeah, that's how ANSUL systems usually work. One fusible link goes, or the tube cracks, or some jackass yanks the handle after they get fired, and you get one hell of a mess. They're supposed to be tied into the vent hood electrical too, to shut down all fans (makeup and exhaust), but when the contactors fail some people just bypass them.

You can usually clean the equipment (except fryers, they're a pain to clean after that), but if the equipment is old, it probably makes more sense to just milk that insurance money and replace everything.

One pizza place I worked in... the AHJ required that there be discharge nozzles INSIDE THE PIZZA OVEN (typical conveyor style oven used by most pizza chains), and inside the vent hood (instead of exposed). That was ... different. And would have absolutely destroyed the oven had the system gone off.

e: wait I just re-read this. they used just a tube instead of fusible links? :psypop:

It's something I've only seen once. These weren't nozzles pointed into the oven - these were nozzles actually inside the oven. The oven had holes drilled (well, cut via holesaw) in the back of it for the nozzles/pipes to pass through. Weirdest poo poo I've seen. I'm used to seeing nozzles pointing toward the openings, but not having them inside the cooking chamber. It made it a real pain in the rear end to pull the oven out for cleaning/maintenance (they're on wheels for a reason), and those are forced air ovens... so that would make one hell of a mess from blowing the liquid everywhere. Even if a contactor was in-line to shut down the oven (I didn't get that far, I was just a driver there and had to clean the drat thing occasionally), the fans take a good minute to spin down.

Pneumatic is a new one on me, I think they usually have a cable attached to the fusible links. Fusible link pops, cable loses tension, and several people have a very bad day (but not as bad as it would be if the place burned down). But I'm just a casual observer.

The auto in my Integra (B18A - 1.8 DOHC) wasn't terrible to deal with, especially for late 80s tech (car was a 91 model year, but they used the same gearbox from 90-01 IIRC). It downshifted quickly when needed, it would downshift as you slowed down (so if you had to get moving again in a hurry, it was already in a lower gear - also, that tiny bit of engine braking), and most importantly (to me anyway), it shifted pretty firmly for what was essentially an economy car that pretended to be a sports car. I'll take a firm shift over one you can't feel; at least that way I know the clutches aren't seeing a ton of wear.

It shifted firm enough that it would chirp the front tires on 1->2 if you had it matted.

Honestly, that autobox impressed me; most of the ones I've driven since then just piss me off. I got tested in August or September, results were negative. It's been several years since he and I had any kind of sexual contact, and my sex life is about as exciting as a ream of paper these days, so I'm likely in the clear.

I'm going to go get tested again this week just to be safe; there's a thrift store near one of my jobs that uses proceeds to sponsor HIV testing and HIV medications. Testing is free there, and it's on the way to work; it takes about 15 minutes. He told me he started showing symptoms last week (he didn't tell me what those symptoms were), and his doctor ordered a test. He got the results yesterday.

My doctor wants me to get a shitload of bloodwork done ASAP, and gave me a blank referral to a nephrologist (doctor knows how hard it is to find someone in-network with my poo poo insurance, hence the blank referral, but I found someone a couple of days ago thanks to a city facebook group). But that's unrelated to the whole "oh gently caress someone I slept with caught the hivvy" and more to do with my last round of bloodwork being... not great.

4th gen Accord breaking down isn't exactly a big surprise to most people. The distributor was a weak spot, and too many people never bother with the timing belt. Though to be honest I see far more 6th gen Accords broken down than any other Honda, despite seeing just as many 4th gens on the road. The 6th gens, at least in my own ownership experience, were pretty crappy cars outside of the engine and trans.

The ITR though... holy poo poo. I thought Honda torqued the crank pulley bolt to 1,000,000 ugga duggas on all of their classic engines. Good luck with it. :smith: How long has it been since the timing belt was last changed, if ever? It sounds like whoever did it last may have (massively) overtorqued the crank pulley bolt.

e: although minivans aren't all bad, I'd drive this one all day

A good time to nail that fucker to the wall as this poo poo is in the news today:

Eh.. as someone who's been blocked in by first responders (police in my case - they double parked behind my car instead of blocking an empty space closer to the apartment they were in).

Dude can wait a few minutes. If a first responder is there, don't gently caress with them. You might need them someday. If you have an actual driveway, you can just drive across the lawn or some poo poo.

(also, poo poo, I'd even run with scissors if she showed up... and she don't even have the right equipment for me)

For the Beetles, a common way to check for problems is to look at the grille. Often, they'll have a mark left over from the manufacturing process, resembling a capital W with a V just above it. If you see that mark, it's a defective car and should be scrapped.

I think :golfclap: is pretty appropriate here... since a Golf is also found with those marks.

I think that's still hitting on something OP was complaining about - just not enough display to navigate easily through folders. Stereos with actual pixel displays (even low resolution) seem to be what he's looking for.

That is a drat decent stereo, but are they even sold in the US? I'm only seeing them on international websites.

It's not been a good month.

You guys heard me whine enough about the job poo poo.

Friend B got his positive HIV diagnosis the other day, after developing symptoms recently (also we've slept together, once, but it's been a couple of years.. protection was used, but still makes one go :ohdear: about their own health)

Friend C got a positive Hep C diagnosis.

I'm getting tested again tomorrow (last test was a few months ago), but I'm pretty sure friend B and I had our fun before he was infected. I got tested this summer and was negative, but after finding out someone you've been with has HIV, step 1 is go get tested again. Step 2 is start trying to find out what resources there are for said friend, since he's working a minimum wage job with no health insurance.

C is an IV drug user that shares needles, so that's.... not a massive surprise, but still sad. Unfortunately, he still uses IV drugs, so there's a decent chance the next funeral I go to will be his. I don't mean to sound totally stone hearted, but I've pretty much accepted that this will be happening.

A good friend lost her mother to hep C this year (she acquired it from a blood transfusion back before blood donations were tested for C), another friend got a liver transplant due to Hep C and is doing well (... probably the same liver friend's mother was going to get if she'd lived it a bit longer, they were both at the same hospital, on the same list).

Hopefully December is a better month. Hopefully 2018 is a better year. I lost a good friend to a heroin OD this spring, and I had no clue he was even doing any drugs beyond drinking and :420: these days.

Amazon were meant to be delivering some stuff to my parents' hotel for them to bring back for me, but it seems to have vanished into the ether instead of being delivered yesterday... and when I pointed out I needed it to turn up today, it magically became "order cancelled as refused delivery". Uh, no. Had a moan at them, and got them to instead waive the shipping and dutyto send it direct to the UK instead.

Whoever's the local STR-analogue driving that route for them may be in for a bit of a bumming about it if it was them who made that decision, rather than the CS rep that marked it as such, but if you lost it, just say you lost it.

If the tracking was showing AMZL as the carrier, then yeah, it was either a contactor for Amazon (like me) or a local courier company. But if we mark a package as refused, we drat well better return it that day. If we have more than a couple of packages not get returned, we're gone.

I've never had a decent hotel refuse to accept a delivery, so long as I had a name and room number. Some crappy hotels won't accept anything on behalf of people staying there (Motel 6, Super 8, etc), but we're supposed to attempt delivery to the room unless the customer specified otherwise (a lot of drivers are too lazy though, and just dump it on the front desk).

I've been priced out of the Dallas side of the metro area unless I get pretty far out. I know one person commuting to work halfway from loving Oklahoma now, and a lot of friends have moved out to areas like Greenville TX (and still commute into DFW for work :cripes:)
